Senior Information Analyst - Coding Programme, Band 6

Job summary

This role will be providing analytical support for the Coding programme. Clinical coding is paramount for services to be appropriately reimbursed for the activity they do, along with the complexity this entails. The thoroughness of patient information is not only extremely important for income, but also for patient safety and experience, as well as for submission and benchmarking purposes.

This post will be to support this programme and helping shape where opportunities exist as well as ongoing monitoring of the programme, creating reports and responding quickly to adhoc requests.

Main duties of the job

This role is based within the Business Intelligence Unit at Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical capabilities, along with the ability to effectively communicate and present complex information to a range of different stakeholders. The candidate will need to be able to work under pressure and be able to prioritise their own workload when there are conflicting deadlines.

We are therefore looking for an analyst who has drive and passion for delivering an exemplar BI service. An individual who is both forward thinking and solutions orientated.

Job description

Job responsibilities

i. Take responsibility for delegated information streams within the department, to implement and adjust activity forecasting models, making use of Business Intelligence software, SQL and other information analysis/collection tools in order to ensure that information produced is of the required accuracy and is available easily to users, adhering to deadlines.

ii. To interrogate large volumes of highly complex data, using a variety of robust statistical and analytical methods, ensuring that the analysis derived from such information incorporates specified benchmarking information which can be used to inform the management decision making process, by monitoring key targets and informing the relevant managers of any anomalies, exceptions etc and instigating remedial corrective action when appropriate.

iii. To update and adapt systems, within the remit of this post, to ensure the accuracy and validity of information produced at all times, ensuring that the information provided is able to express complex datasets in the most efficient and effective manner.

iv. To report to the Divisional Information Manager on current operational issues and the achievement of agreed targets, for specifically delegated information streams, and assisting other members of the team with the production of their reports when required.

v. To work independently using initiative with regard to workload, ensuing all statutory deadlines are met and prioritising responses to information requests in an efficient and effective manner, complying with Trust and NHS protocols and guidelines at all times and referring issues to line manager for advice when appropriate.

vi. To proactively review and analyse data and to interpret information produced within the department, highlighting deviations from targets and trends and bringing key issues to the attention of relevant managers with recommendations for possible action, ensuring the local divisional management team receives professional support and advice on performance information.

vii. To provide information requested by directors/ senior managers on a regular and ad hoc basis in relation to Service delivery and target performance, ensuring the accuracy of such data by applying robust and consistent validation processes.

viii. To report any identified errors or poor-quality data to the Divisional Information Manager where there is a potential that the information may impact on the accuracy of the information reporting of the department.

ix. To contribute to the maintenance of good corporate and clinical governance arrangements, including risk management, by informing the Divisional Information Manager of any potential risk or breach of compliance.

x. Negotiating and influencing skills. Ability to engage with senior staff at a professional level to identify management information needs.

xi. To maintain confidentiality at all times and to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act, reporting any problems etc. in the appropriate manner.

xii. Present verbal and written reports

xiii. Ability to embrace new skills, ways of working and positively influence junior team members. Flexibility is key.

xiv. Good communication skills to facilitate:

a. working in partnership with other teams and with external organisations,b. sharing of knowledge with other Business Intelligence team members, and training of more junior members of the team.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential
  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent educational level
  • Excellent SQL skills- data management, interrogation & analysis products
  • Advanced knowledge and highly skilled in the use of MS Excel & BI visualising tools (Tableau, Power BI etc.)
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of NHS Data Dictionary including datasets, data standards and data modelling concepts
  • An analytical mindset and ability to explain trends and themes in data.
  • Detailed understanding of the importance of data quality (attention to detail)
  • Ability and experience to present information with a high level of accuracy to a wide range of audiences both verbally and electronically (e.g. charts graphs, reports, scorecards, tables, dashboards etc.)
  • Ability to challenge and manage user expectations
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to the development of advanced analytical methodologies.
