This is a rare opportunity to join a University at the very beginning of a major data transformation journey.
Following a successful Microsoft Fabric proof of concept, the university is investing heavily in building a modern enterprise data platform from the ground up. They are now looking for their first dedicated Data Engineer to help turn that vision into a scalable, operational capability that will shape how data is used across the institution for years to come.
If you are someone who enjoys building rather than simply maintaining, this role offers the chance to make a genuine impact in a greenfield environment where your ideas, engineering standards, and technical approach will directly influence the future direction of the platform.
The team
You will work alongside an experienced Microsoft Fabric architect who has successfully implemented Fabric within higher education previously, helping to move the university from proof of concept into real delivery. This is not a role where you inherit years of legacy pipelines and technical debt. It is an opportunity to help define the foundations properly from the outset.
The environment itself is collaborative, supportive, and genuinely people focused. The team are looking for someone who brings energy, curiosity, and a practical mindset alongside strong engineering capability. They want someone who enjoys working with stakeholders, solving problems, and helping non-technical teams understand the value of modern data platforms.
The role
From a technical perspective, you will be designing and building scalable data pipelines, supporting the development of the university’s emerging Microsoft Fabric platform, and helping establish structured approaches to ingestion, transformation, governance, and analytics delivery.
You will have the opportunity to work across a broad and meaningful data landscape including student, staff, operational, and financial datasets that directly support the university’s strategic decision making.
Key experience we're looking for:
- Experience building and maintaining modern data pipelines
- Strong SQL and data transformation capability
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Synapse, or similar cloud data technologies
- Experience implementing ETL or ELT solutions across multiple data sources
- Understanding of layered data architectures such as bronze, silver, and gold
- Knowledge of data quality, monitoring, and optimisation practices
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirables:
- Experience within Higher Education or the public sector would be beneficial, although it is not essential.
- DevOps practices, version control and knowledge of CI/CD approaches
- Experience working with data visualisation tools like PowerBI etc
The university has already planned future growth within the team, including additional Data Engineering hires and potential progression into senior or lead responsibilities for the successful individual.
This role would suit a Data Engineer who wants more ownership, more influence, and the opportunity to help shape a modern data capability in an organisation genuinely investing in its digital future.
