Location: Barnsley – Rare visits to South Yorkshire office

Salary: £65,000

We’re working with a tech-led business that’s looking for a pragmatic and experienced Development Manager to lead their software engineering function across both .NET and PHP environments. This is a strategic, hands-on role with a 50/50 split between leadership and development—ideal for someone who thrives in delivery-focused environments and enjoys mentoring high-performing teams.

You’ll be responsible for shaping the technical direction, driving consistent delivery, and fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration. The business values iterative progress, clean architecture, and empowering teams through structured leadership and modern engineering practices.

Ideal Experience

  • Proven experience leading software development teams in commercial or enterprise settings
  • Strong technical background in C#, .NET Core, MVC, Angular, SQL Server
  • Working knowledge of PHP (Laravel preferred)
  • Deep understanding of SOLID principles, design patterns, and RESTful API design
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and agile delivery (TeamCity, Octopus Deploy, GitLab CI/CD)
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to foster ownership and accountability across teams
  • Strong technical judgment with a balance of quality, speed, and scope

Bonus Skills

  • Familiarity with secure coding and data protection practices
  • Experience in manufacturing, ERP, or enterprise-scale systems
  • Knowledge of microservices and cloud technologies (Azure preferred)
  • Exposure to automated testing frameworks (e.g. Selenium, Playwright)
  • Experience with Unix/AIX shell scripting, Linux administration, and web servers (Apache, Nginx)
  • Background in technical change or system modernisation programmes

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor multiple development teams across .NET and PHP
  • Deliver high-quality software through structured planning and pragmatic execution
  • Balance short-term delivery with long-term system stability and scalability
  • Contribute to technical design, code reviews, and issue resolution
  • Champion clean code, modular architecture, and disciplined CI/CD practices
  • Manage resourcing across permanent and contract teams
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and professional development
  • Collaborate with analysts, architects, and stakeholders to align delivery with business goals
