Job summary

Research Infrastructure DeveloperThe GOSH DRIVE Team is looking for someone to build, configure, and support our research computing infrastructure. At the moment this consists of a small on-premise cluster, managed research platforms provided by some of our partners, and an experimental project with a major cloud vendor.We hope this new role will accelerate our use of those existing tools as well as pioneering the addition of new hardware (e.g. specialised GPU boxes) and cloud resources. Working in a modern dev-ops style you will use Ansible, Terraform, containerisation etc. to set up repeatable processes for deployment and monitoring while working with GOSH ICT and third-party vendors to keep development environments, research data flows, and machine learning pipelines running; constantly improving; and contributing to savingthe lives of sick children in our hospital and beyond.

No previous experience in research or healthcare is necessary, please apply if you have some of the above technical skills and would like to collaborate closely with clinicians and data scientists to raise the standard of data use in the NHS.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare. Together with our research partner, the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, we form the UK's only academic Biomedical Research Centre specialising in paediatrics.

Main duties of the job

Since its formation in 1852, the hospital has been dedicated to children's healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses.

The Great Ormond Street Hospital Data Research, Innovation and VirtualEnvironments (DRIVE) Team was created to raise the standard of patient care using technology. Through our Digital Research Environment (DRE) we supply data for research, clinical audit and operational projects while strategising for the most effective, safest deployment of the newest tools.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential
  • Educated to degree level in a computer science, mathematical, science-based or relevant subject
  • Post graduate qualification or equivalent relevant experience
  • Maths and English GCSE grade C or above or equivalent qualification
  • IT qualification in MS Office or equivalent experience
Desirable
  • Project management foundation level or relevant experience

Experience/Knowledge

Essential
  • Experience of software engineering and the software development life-cycle, including issue tracking, testing, documentation, version control and continuous integration
  • Experience of DevOps style management of compute infrastructure, including orchestration tools (e.g. Ansible), infrastructure-as-code on cloud platforms (e.g. Terraform) and Kubernetes/GitOps
Desirable
  • Experience working under a tight information governance regime including strict separation of resources and the management of PPI/other sensitive data
  • Experience working with healthcare-specific technologies and data flows e.g. FHIR, OMOP, DICOM etc.
  • Previous experience in the NHS, healthcare or medical research

Skills/Abilities

Essential
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills, including prioritising to achieve deadlines under pressure and with frequent interruptions
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex information to staff at all levels
  • Excellent skills in at least one commonly used programming language (Java, Python, C, Rust etc.) and a demonstrable ability to quickly learn new languages and paradigms
