Senior Automation Test Engineer (Remote, UK) Location: UK-based, fully remote (occasional travel for team collaboration in NW UK)Salary:  £55,000 to £65,000Applicants must be UK based and have the right to work without sponsorship The Opportunity A growing energy technology business is looking to hire an Automation Test Engineer to support the quality, reliability and ongoing development of a mission-critical internal platform.The organisation operates complex assets across industrial environments, where system stability and confidence in releases are essential. Its in-house platform supports monitoring, control and operational insight across live customer sites, meaning testing has real-world commercial and operational impact.This role is ideal for someone who enjoys ownership, autonomy and working closely with engineers to embed quality throughout the development lifecycle.The Role You’ll be responsible for designing, building and maintaining automated and manual testing across a cloud-based platform, including web applications and APIs.Working alongside software developers and technical leadership, you’ll take ownership of the testing approach, deciding what to automate, identifying gaps in coverage, and evolving test frameworks as the platform grows.There is an existing automation foundation in place (UI and pipeline-based testing), which this role will extend, improve and mature.This is a hands-on role with a strong focus on practical testing that fits how the platform is built, deployed and used in live operational environments.Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain and execute automated and manual test scripts across the platform
  • Build and maintain automated UI tests for web applications using Selenium or similar tools
  • Design and execute automated API tests using tools such as Postman
  • Carry out exploratory and manual testing where automation is not appropriate or not yet in place
  • Own the testing approach, identifying coverage gaps and proposing pragmatic improvements
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and maintain test runs
  • Raise clear, actionable defects and track them through to resolution and regression testing
  • Work closely with developers to clarify issues, assess impact and support fixes
  • Prioritise testing activity based on operational and commercial risk
  • Maintain clear test documentation to support consistency and knowledge sharing
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in testing practices and quality standards
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Experience developing automated tests using Selenium 
  • Strong test scripting skills across both manual and automated testing
  • Experience testing APIs using Postman or similar tools
  • Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, including test plans, pipelines and defect tracking
  • Comfortable documenting test approaches, scripts and outcomes clearly
  • Confident working collaboratively with software engineers, able to challenge constructively
  • Detail-oriented, pragmatic and delivery-focused
  • Proven ability to work independently and take ownership in a self-directed role
Desirable Experience
  • Experience testing modern web applications (e.g. Blazor, SPA frameworks)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD-driven development environments
  • Understanding of REST APIs and web application architectures
  • Experience managing test data and working across multiple environments
  • Background supporting internally developed or business-critical platforms
