Senior Blood Transfusion Practitioner – Blood Track Lead
Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join the blood transfusion team with the opportunity to drive change and lead on this important blood safety initiative. The post holder will become a specialist in the provision and maintenance of Blood Track but will also be responsible for fulfilling the role of a senior transfusion practitioner, working closely with the other members of the transfusion team.
The Blood Track system is integral to ensuring the safe transfusion of patients at GSTT, across Royal Brompton Hospital, Harefield Hospital, Evelina Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, Guy's Hospital and satellite sites. This system continues to grow following the implementation of an enterprise system jointly with King's College Hospital (KCH) and is fundamental in the day to day use of blood products.
Monitoring the quality of the service is very important, as is the implementation of changes to provide the optimum service for patients and the Trust.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the continued success of Blood Track, system maintenance ensuring its continued function and business continuity planning whilst providing reporting, teaching, training and education around blood transfusion and safety.
The post holder will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective management of interdependencies and delivery of objectives relating to Blood Track and the wider BT pathway.
The Trust has implemented a new electronic health records system (EPIC). The Apollo Programme will help the Trust transform the way we deliver care and empower our patients to get more involved in decisions about their health. The post holder will ensure that the Blood Track system is optimised and maintained following implementation and stabilisation, working closely with wider teams supporting optimisation and stabilisation across theelectronic health record (EPIC), blood tracking and BT Laboratory information management (LIMS) pathway.A key role will be the rigorous definition and ownership of the projects including risk and issue management, implementation, stabilisation and optimisation. GSTT is expected to roll outissue on demand at all GSTT sites in 2024/5.
The role also involves working Trust-wide with staff from all relevant disciplines to promote safe, appropriate and economic use of blood components whilst developing strategies for the Trust.

The post holder will be the link into groups with regards to transformation and business-as-usual in relation to Blood Track. They will attend meetings as a GSTT blood transfusion representative and feedback to colleagues in the GSTT blood transfusion team. It is expected that the specific projects managed by the post holder will change over time as the portfolio of work changes.

- Excellent command of English language

- Intermediate use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of the EU Directive for blood safety & quality, NHSLA standards, SHOT, MHRA, and BCSH guidelines

Qualification
- State Registered Nurse/Midwife/ODP/Biomedical scientist
