Senior Electrical Engineer
Job summary
This role is a senior member of the team with professional accountability for estate electrical infrastructure. The post-holder will support the operational teams in the development of the estate utilising the latest ERIC / PAM data alongside key information from National Policy standards, HTM/HBN guidance and industry best practice.
This role exists to safeguard patient and staff wellbeing by overseeing statutory compliance, risk management, and technical standards across all electrical assets, including generators, UPS, transformers, switchgear, medical equipment, HVAC, lighting systems, lifts, electrical services supply and distribution, low and high voltage systems.
The role holder will be required to act as a senior technical authority, supporting the Heads of Service in delivering a robust estates compliance framework, driving continuous improvement in system performance, and contribute to the Trust's strategic objectives in sustainability, energy efficiency, and service resilience.
In line with the NHS Management and Leadership Framework and Code of Practice, the post holder will demonstrate compassionate, inclusive and accountable leadership, model GSTT values, and create psychologically safe environments in which staff can speak up, learn and improve.
Main duties of the job
- Lead the electrical infrastructure stewardship of the estate, ensuring it is legally compliant, safe and with appropriate levels of resilience
- Continuously monitor and review services; identify and implement service, operational and financial improvements to deliver within allocated budgets, improving value for money, including being responsive to changing business needs
- Ensure maintenance regimes aligns with SFG20, escalate end-of-life assets for capital replacement, and develop a lifecycle plan for local inspections, maintenance and Authorised Engineer inspections
- Ensure compliance with all HTMs, HBNs, SFG20, British Standards, ERIC, PAM and statutory health & safety requirements, including testing programmes and Trust duties relating to infection control, safeguarding, equality, and information governance
- Create psychologically safe, inclusive teams where people are treated with dignity and respect, concerns are listened to, and discriminatory behaviour is challenged
- Model anti-racist leadership and act to reduce inequity affecting colleagues, patients and service users, with attention to intersectionality and barriers experienced by marginalised groups

Person Specification
Qualifications/ Education
- Education to first degree level or equivalent demonstrable experience, in an electrical engineering discipline alongside additional in-depth professional electrical systems training and specialist knowledge
- Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- Authorised Person/ Responsible Person training/qualifications.
- CPD in all of the technical areas within the post holder's span of control.
- H&S qualification, NEBOSH Diploma / IOSH.
- Asbestos awareness
Professionals/ Statutory Registration
- No statutory professional registration is specified unless explicitly required for a local appointment, authorisation or designated responsible person duty. Role-specific appointments must be supported by appropriate competence, training and formal Trust authorisation / governance arrangements
Previous experience
- Extensive, successful track record of senior electrical engineering role/s within an Estates, Facilities, infrastructure or equivalent complex operational environment.
- Experience of organisation-wide policy development, interpreting legislative and other requirements.
- Detailed understanding of the engineering requirements within a complex NHS environment.
- Experience of leading complex services in the NHS or an equivalent regulated environment, with evidence of service improvement, compliance and stakeholder partnership working.

Knowledge
- Excellent understanding and specialist knowledge of NHS HTN / HBN requirements.
- Highly developed communication skills, with ability to communicate highly complex information where exceptional influencing skills are required.
- Highly developed leadership skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams, and have them understand the Trust-wide and local performance expectations.
- Ability to explain technical standards and risks clearly to a wide range of stakeholders, using plain English where possible and defining specialist acronyms on first use.
