Transfusion Clinical Fellow
Job summary
Applications are invited for appointment to a clinical research training fellow in data driven transfusion practice based at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in London.
The post will be based at the Guy's & St Thomas' sites and the post holder will be someone who has an interest in gaining further knowledge and experience in transfusion medicine, and developing research skills including data analysis and publications. The post holder will work with the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust team and researchers in the NIHR Blood Transfusion Research Unit (BTRU), described below.
The core aim of the research undertaken by the NIHR BTRU is "How can we better use data in transfusion?" Blood transfusion is a common procedure carried out in hospitals; nearly 2 million blood components are transfused in England at a cost of over £300 million/year. Used to best effect, these play a vital role in saving lives, but repeated analyses show large gaps between recommended and actual transfusion practice. Unnecessary transfusions put patients at risk of adverse effects and are a waste of a limited resource. In addition, blood services often find it difficult to predict how much blood hospitals need. This results in both wasted blood and a risk that the best type of blood component may not always be available for a patient needing a transfusion.

Main duties of the job
To provide clinical input into the management of patients regarding transfusion medicine. To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care. To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
To participate in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management.
Be an active member of the GSTT and KHP Haematology Transfusion working group, and support the development of associated projects and programmes of work.
Participate as appropriately, in wider KHP Haematology activities e.g. educational events, away days, and strategic workshops as a subject matter

Job responsibilities
The principal duty of the post-holder will be to undertake clinics, support the Trust in to reduce inappropriate transfusion through various projects and developing a research project on the key aspects of use of data for patients and health care professional across the NHS. The post holder will also contribute to publications and be expected to participate in all relevant academic and teaching activities.
- Participate and integrate in the GSTT, KHP and NIHR BTRU programme of research. Plan, manage and conduct an original research project and associated activities, taking direction from their supervisor and other colleagues as appropriate.
- Coordinate multiple aspects of work to deliver novel research data in accordance with established timelines set between you and the Principal investigator and supervisor.
Regularly contribute to or write research articles at an international level for peer reviewed journals, book chapters, and reviews.
Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups, in accordance with supervisors requirements.
Involvement in the writing and submission of grant applications.
Person Specification
Medical experience
- GMC registered medical practitioner or ability to obtain GMC requirements and practice in the UK (please see the general medical Council website for further details).
- Comprehensive clinical experience in Haematology, particularly transfusion medicine.
- Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
- Previous experience of poor interest in health service research, quality improvement, evidence-based medicine, or working with "big data".
- A medical degree and some specialist experience, typically having obtained MRCP or equivalent, but not CCT or consultant status
IT Literacy
- High level of computer literacy and highly competent use of windows operating systems and Microsoft office applications.
Previous experience and skills
- Demonstrate high level of attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and ability to work with people from different backgrounds and levels of seniority.
- Willing to undertake training on data analysis and related AI software.
- Previous experience of maintaining well documented clinical and research records.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to evolving environments.
- Excellent oral and written communications and interpersonal skills.
- Experience of undergraduate teaching and post graduate training
- Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management
- Previous experience of poor interest in health service research, quality improvement, evidence-based medicine, or working with "big data".
- Demonstrating a willingness to keep up-to-date with scientific, clinical and professional issues, in particular relating to developments in the specific subject area
- Previous publications and experiencing giving presentations
- Prior research experience (typically a BSC in a relevant scientific subject or computer science).
- Good understanding of statistical package brackets for example Stata, SPSS, SAS or R).
