Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-orientated Head of Information Governance and Business Intelligence Lead to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to shape how information is managed, protected and transformed into insights that drive decision-making and patient care.

Main duties of the job

The Information Governance and Business Intelligence Lead will oversee all aspects of information governance, data protection compliance, and business intelligence within the Hospice. This role ensures the Hospice complies with legal and regulatory data standards while enabling the strategic use of data to drive operational efficiency, effectiveness, and organisational insight.

A key part of this role involves leading the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) submission process as well as working closely with clinical colleagues to present accurate, timely, and actionable data via dashboards and performance reports.

An essential responsibility of this role is to ensure the organisation meets the Care Quality Commission (CQC)s regulatory requirements, on data, evidence, and compliance.

Main Responsibilities

Information Governance

  • Act as the hospices lead on information governance, providing expertise on compliance with the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 and NHS information standards alongside our Data Protection Officer.
  • Lead and manage the annual completion, evidence collection, and submission of the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT), ensuring full compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain the data asset register, data breach register, record of processing activities (RoPA), provide guidance on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) to colleagues across the organisation, and oversee internal audits.
  • Respond to and liaise with relevant parties including the Data Protection Officer (DPO), Caldicott Guardian, and Information Commissioners Office (ICO) as necessary, to manage any Subject Access Requests (SARs) and data breaches, in line with legislation.
  • Deliver training and guidance across the organisation on information governance policies, procedures, and best practice legislative requirements.
  • Promote a positive information governance culture and responding to incidents and embedding learnings within the organisation.
  • Be approachable and visible throughout the organisation as the primary contact for information governance questions or concerns.
  • Work alongside the Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO), DPO, Caldicott Guardian and our Managed Service Provider (MSP) to embed and promote the importance of data security across the organisation.

Business Intelligence & Reporting

  • Develop, manage, and maintain the patient database, incident system, dashboards and reporting to aid clinical, operational, and strategic decision-making.
  • Development of clinical systems to optimise data management to support patient pathways and care.
  • Work collaboratively with the clinical management team to produce clinical dashboards and performance metrics that reflect patient outcomes, caseload activity, and quality indicators that reflect both Care Quality Commission (CQC) Single Assessment Framework standards and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
  • Attend and present regularly at Clinical Management Team meetings, providing insights, interpreting trends, and supporting discussions with data driven evidence.
  • Partner with all departments such as Clinical, Fundraising, People Services and Retail, to produce tailored reports and data insight analysis.
  • Collaborate with the other Kent and Medway adult hospice data leads to generate information and insights across the catchment area to inform the palliative and end of life care strategy.
  • Work with other to external stakeholders, as necessary, such as the Integrated Care Board (ICB) to drive informed decision making and evidence for funding requirements.

Systems, IT & Data Management

  • Use and manage data tools such as Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables, formulas, and charts), Power BI, and SQL for querying, analysing, and visualising data.
  • Support integration and automation between organisational systems ensuring consistency and accuracy of data reporting.
  • Champion a data quality culture and lead on improvements in data accuracy, completeness, and accessibility.
  • Ensure appropriate technical and procedural controls are in place to protect data security and integrity across systems.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Desirable
  • Professional qualifications in Data Protection (e.g., BCS DPO certification) or Business Intelligence and Analytics.

Experience

Essential
  • Knowledge of UK data protection law and NHS information governance requirements.
  • High-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions for data analysis.
  • Experience with business intelligence tools such as Power BI or equivalent.
  • Proven ability to translate complex data into accessible reports and presentations.
  • Comfortable presenting data in meetings and engaging with clinical and senior leadership teams.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with strong attention to detail.
Desirable
  • Previous experience in a hospice, NHS, or charitable healthcare environment.
  • Familiarity with clinical systems such as iCare, EMIS or SystmOne.
  • Experience designing or managing data architecture or reporting infrastructure.
  • Experience of leading and submitting the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit -DSPT.
  • Working knowledge of SQL for data extraction, manipulation, and reporting.
