Founding AI Engineer

Location: Remote (London is ideal, EU is preferred, US is possible for the right person)

Compensation: Blend of competitive salary + meaningful equity based on personal preference

The unique impact

At Hale, our mission is to save lives through prevention . We’re building the consumer layer for disease prevention, starting with heart disease.

We will cut preventable deaths by 10x by combining evidence-based protocols with advanced blood testing, imaging, and AI to help people understand and access treatment to address their long-term health risks before it’s too late.

Hale was co-founded by Patrick (founded Span Health, acquired by Eight Sleep) and Palle (General Manager at Uber). We’ve raised a seed round from Menlo Ventures , led by Shawn Carolan (early investor in Uber, Roku, Siri), and we are now growing faster than we imagined.

Now, we’re looking for our first engineer to join us on this mission.

The architect

As the Founding AI Engineer , you’ll architect, build, and refine the systems that power Hale’s intelligence: from our risk-scoring engine to the recommendations that helps users interpret their results and take action.

You’ll work directly with our CEO to shape the product, the tech, and the company’s DNA. This is a hands-on role for someone who loves to ship fast, learn fast, and see their work improve people’s health in real time .

What you’ll do

• Build Hale’s risk and recommendations engine : combine questionnaire, biomarker, and genetic data to generate personalized recommendations.
• Contribute to the consumer app : collaborate across the stack (React Router, TypeScript, Supabase, Vercel) to deliver a seamless experience.
• Own model evaluation and compliance : design test suites, build evaluation sets, and maintain audit logs for safety and regulatory readiness.
• Shape our AI culture : define standards for prompting, evals, memory, agents, and guardrails as we scale.
• Help build the team : participate in interviews, mentor new engineers, and influence hiring across engineering.

What you bring

• Experience in software engineering or AI product development.
• An eye for detail and love for great user experience: you care about every interaction and pixel.
• Excellent written communication, working across clinical, design, and engineering domains.
• Ownership-driven, user-obsessed, detail-oriented, and relentlessly curious about how AI can improve human health outcomes.
• Proven track record in TypeScript , React Router, Node.js, Supabase .
• Experience building or integrating with LLMs , agents , or evaluation systems (RAG, fine-tuning, multi-modal models).
• Familiarity with modern AI infra (Together.ai, Hugging Face, OpenAI API, vector DBs).
• Bonus: exposure to healthtech , biomarkers , or regulated environments .

What success looks like

In 3 Months

• You’ve shipped across frontend and backend from day 1 to surface personalized health insights in the product.
• You’ve shipped your first validated version of the risk and recommendation model and have it running end-to-end with live data.
• You’ve instrumented telemetry and model evaluation to track performance.

In 6 Months

• Hale’s AI engine is powering recommendations for real users.
• You’ve improved interpretability and clinical trust through clear explanations and visualizations.
• You’ve introduced reproducible build and evaluation workflows for future AI models.

In 12 Months

• You’ve established Hale’s AI foundations: compliance, observability, and continuous learning loops: for scaling across tens of thousands of users.
• You’ve helped recruit and mentor the next generation of engineers who will grow the AI team.
• You’re a core shaper of Hale’s technical direction.
