Fractional Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
12-Month Fixed-Term Contract | 3 Days per Week | Fully Remote (UK-based)
Salary: £70,000 per annum (pro rata)
We are seeking an experienced Fractional Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to join us on a 12-month fixed-term contract, working 3 days per week. This is a fully remote role, and applicants must be based in the UK.
This is a unique opportunity to shape and deliver a forward-looking technology strategy within a purpose-driven organisation. As a fractional executive leader, you will establish a clear roadmap, governance framework, and internal capability that will enable the organisation to continue progressing once the contract concludes.
The Role
As Fractional CTO, you will provide executive leadership across technology, data, and digital platforms, ensuring systems are secure, compliant, resilient, and aligned with organisational priorities.
You will define the technology vision, oversee delivery through internal teams and suppliers, and ensure that technology investments deliver measurable value while effectively managing risk.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Strategy & Architecture
- Define and deliver a clear, aligned technology strategy and roadmap
- Translate organisational priorities into scalable, secure architectures
- Oversee digital platforms, data capabilities, and cloud-based services (including SaaS)
- Act as the organisation’s senior technology authority, guiding key decisions
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Establish robust IT governance and compliance frameworks
- Ensure best practice in cyber security, data protection, and access management
- Oversee data governance, including quality, ownership, and ethical use
- Provide clear reporting on technology risk to senior leadership
- Ensure third-party suppliers meet contractual and compliance standards
Technology Operations & Supplier Management
- Ensure reliable, high-performing technology services
- Define and manage service standards across internal and outsourced support
- Lead and mentor internal technology and data colleagues
- Manage key supplier relationships, ensuring performance, value, and cost control
- Support budgeting and financial planning with senior leadership
Resilience & Business Continuity
- Ensure effective disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities
- Oversee backup, recovery, and incident response planning
- Provide leadership during major incidents and drive continuous improvement
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience operating as a CTO or Fractional CTO, or in a senior technology leadership role within a complex SME environment
- Strong expertise in cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure
- Experience in technology strategy, architecture, and governance
- Experience managing outsourced technology providers
- Strong understanding of cyber security, data governance, and compliance
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
Desirable:
- Experience in the non-profit, charitable, or education sector
