Location: Hybrid – 2 days per week in Stockport
Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum (depending on experience)
The Company:
A growing IT Managed Services and Infrastructure Solutions provider is seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Linux Systems Engineer to join its experienced technical team. This organisation delivers IT infrastructure projects and ongoing support to clients across the UK, Europe, and APAC regions, with a strong customer base spanning both the private and public sectors.
As part of its continued growth, the company is offering an exciting opportunity for a Linux engineer to further develop their technical skills across a varied estate of traditional, hyperconverged, and cloud-based infrastructure environments.
The Role
The successful candidate will play an active role in the administration, support, and maintenance of Linux-based systems and wider infrastructure services. The position will involve supporting a range of on-premise and cloud-hosted environments, assisting with infrastructure projects, and contributing to the continuous improvement of IT services.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically motivated individual seeking to broaden their experience in a collaborative and supportive environment. The role offers a mixture of remote working, office-based time in Stockport, and occasional travel to customer sites, data centres, and, on occasion, international locations for project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day administration and support of Linux systems (predominantly Ubuntu, though experience with other distributions is welcomed).
- Assist with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues across server, storage, and virtualisation environments.
- Support the delivery of infrastructure projects in collaboration with senior engineers and project managers.
- Maintain accurate and detailed technical documentation in line with company standards.
- Work alongside service and technical teams to manage escalated incidents and service requests.
- Adhere to ITIL-aligned incident, problem, and change management processes.
- Contribute to the improvement and development of infrastructure services and operational practices.
Requirements :
The ideal candidate will have prior experience in Linux systems administration and a genuine interest in infrastructure technologies. They will possess strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and the capability to manage competing priorities in a customer-focused environment.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Practical experience of Linux server administration (Ubuntu preferred, but all distributions considered).
- Familiarity with virtualisation technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, or KVM.
- Good troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (for occasional travel to customer sites and data centres).
Desirable Skills
- Exposure to enterprise backup solutions (e.g. Veeam, Commvault, Nakivo).
- Experience working with storage platforms (SAN, NAS).
- Basic networking knowledge (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
- Familiarity with scripting or automation tools (e.g. Bash, Python).
