Databricks Data Engineer (Contract)

Azure | Databricks | SQL | Outside IR35 | Hybrid

THE COMPANY

We're partnering with a global mining organisation that is investing heavily in the evolution of its enterprise data platform. Following significant growth and a wider transformation programme, they're looking to bring in an experienced Senior Data Engineer to strengthen the technical capability of the team and support the delivery of several high-profile data initiatives.

This is a business that places real value on engineering best practice and is looking for someone who can provide immediate technical expertise, influence engineering standards through delivery and help solve complex data engineering challenges across the organisation.

THE ROLE

This is a hands-on Senior Data Engineering contract where you'll operate as a senior individual contributor within a highly collaborative team. Rather than leading people, you'll lead technically, owning complex engineering problems, partnering with architects and acting as a trusted technical interface between engineering teams and the wider business.

You'll be joining a fast-paced environment with significant demand across multiple business functions, requiring someone who can confidently engage with stakeholders, understand technical and commercial requirements and translate them into scalable Azure data solutions.

The platform is built around Azure and Databricks, with SQL sitting at the centre of the engineering approach. The team strongly believes in solving transformation challenges through Spark SQL wherever possible, favouring modular, maintainable and cost-efficient solutions before introducing Python or Scala. They're looking for someone who shares that mindset and can demonstrate deep expertise in designing performant SQL solutions at scale.

Alongside day-to-day engineering, you'll contribute to platform improvements, data modelling, optimisation, automation and engineering best practice, helping to raise capability across the wider team.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Extensive experience delivering enterprise-scale Azure data engineering solutions.

  • Strong knowledge across Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure SQL, Azure Storage and Azure Synapse Analytics.

  • Expert-level SQL with experience building and optimising complex Spark SQL transformations.

  • Strong Databricks experience developing scalable ELT pipelines and modern Lakehouse architectures.

  • Python experience where appropriate, with a clear understanding of when SQL is the preferred solution.

  • Experience designing robust data models using methodologies such as Kimball, Star Schema or Data Vault.

  • Strong understanding of CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code and modern software engineering practices within data platforms.

  • Experience building resilient, scalable cloud-native data platforms.

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to communicate effectively across both technical and business teams.

  • Previous experience within mining, natural resources, manufacturing, utilities or similarly complex enterprise environments would be highly advantageous.

THE BENEFITS

  • Initial 3-month contract with strong extension potential.

  • Outside IR35.

  • Hybrid working with one day onsite per week.

  • Competitive day rate.

  • Opportunity to join a major enterprise transformation programme where you'll have genuine technical influence from day one.

If you're an experienced Azure Data Engineer with deep SQL expertise who enjoys operating as a senior technical individual contributor within a collaborative environment, we'd love to hear from you.
