Junior Data Engineer
Role: Junior Data Engineer Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 (up to £45,000 for the right candidate) + Discretionary Bonus WFH: 5 Days/Week Onsite - South Kensington, London
Overview
Our client is a fast-growing intelligence and analytics firm specialising in global shipping and commodities. Their research team transforms complex maritime data into actionable insight for brokers and clients, powering commercial decisions with high-precision analytics and visualisation.
They are now hiring a Junior Data Engineer to join their engineering and research team. This is a graduate-level opportunity with no prior industry experience required. You'll work side-by-side with experienced engineers and analysts on maintaining and modernising data infrastructure. The business is investing heavily in its platform over the next 12 months, offering significant career growth for curious and ambitious talent.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and improve Python-based ETL pipelines (~60 currently in production)
- Support the migration from on-premise to cloud-based SQL environments
- Keep dashboards and reporting chartbooks (Power BI & PDFs) up to date
- Implement basic data validation and quality controls
- Manage version control and CI/CD workflows using Git
- Contribute to internal documentation
- Provide analytics support using Python when needed
Ideal Candidate
- BSc in Computer Science or a closely related discipline (From Russell Group/Red Brick university)
- Strong Python fundamentals
- Basic SQL skills and familiarity with Git
- Strong communicator, eager to learn, and naturally curious
- Comfortable working across multiple business areas with varied responsibilities
Nice-to-Haves
- Exposure to tools like Prefect, Airflow, or Dagster
- Familiarity with Azure SQL, Snowflake, or dbt
