Lead Data Engineer
Lead Data Engineer (Azure & Terraform) Salary: Up to £90,000 + benefits Location: UK (Hybrid - 3 Days Per Week in London Office)
I'm currently working with an established organisation that is entering an exciting phase of technical transformation and is now looking to appoint a Lead Data Engineer to take ownership of its data engineering capability.
This role has evolved as the business scales its cloud and data platforms, and they are now seeking someone who can provide technical leadership, set best practice, and play a hands-on role in building secure, scalable data solutions on Azure.
The OpportunityAs Lead Data Engineer, you will be responsible for shaping and leading the data engineering function, designing robust data pipelines, and driving the use of modern cloud and infrastructure-as-code practices. You'll work closely with architects, product teams, and stakeholders to deliver data platforms that support analytics, reporting, and future AI-driven initiatives.
This is a senior, influential role offering real autonomy and the chance to define standards, tooling, and ways of working.
Key Responsibilities-
Lead the design and delivery of cloud-based data platforms using Microsoft Azure

Build and maintain scalable, reliable data pipelines and data models

Champion infrastructure as code, with a strong focus on Terraform

Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data engineers

Own data engineering standards, patterns, and best practices

Collaborate with architecture, security, and product teams to ensure solutions are robust and compliant

Support continuous improvement across CI/CD, automation, and data platform performance

Strong experience in a senior or lead data engineering role

Deep hands-on experience with Azure data services (e.g. Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks, Azure SQL, ADLS)

Proven use of Terraform to provision and manage cloud infrastructure

Solid understanding of data modelling, ETL/ELT patterns, and large-scale data processing

Experience working in cloud-native, production environments

Ability to balance hands-on delivery with technical leadership and stakeholder engagement
