Server Support Engineer

Job Title: Server Support Engineer (Shift-Based, Onsite)

Location: Oxford (100% office-based)

Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 + Performance Bonus + On-Call Allowance + Benefits

Working Pattern: 12-hour shifts (4 days on / 4 days off), alternating between days (7am–7pm) and nights (7pm–7am)

Overview

An established, technology-focused organisation in Oxford is growing its IT operations team to support its 24/7 mission-critical systems. We’re seeking a Server Support Engineer to join the infrastructure team and help maintain reliable, secure, and high-performing Microsoft-based environments.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on technical position, enjoys problem-solving in real time, and wants to play a key role in supporting complex, high-availability infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver first and second-line support across Microsoft-based infrastructure and services.
  • Diagnose and resolve incidents affecting servers, virtual environments, and core business applications.
  • Monitor system health and performance to ensure maximum uptime and fast incident response.
  • Support and maintain environments hosting high-traffic web and e-commerce systems.
  • Administer and configure Windows Server , IIS , and Network Load Balancing (NLB) components.
  • Manage and maintain virtualized platforms (VMware and Hyper-V).
  • Participate in a 4-on / 4-off shift rotation , including both day and night shifts.
  • Provide on-call support (approximately 25% of the time) for production emergencies.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to enhance system reliability, security, and performance.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and operational runbooks.

Technical Skills & Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022), IIS , and NLB .
  • Proficient in VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V administration.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft infrastructure services such as Active Directory , DNS , and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) .
  • Understanding of e-commerce or high-traffic web environments with thousands of concurrent users.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues and quickly adapt to new technologies.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell scripting , monitoring tools , and incident management processes is an advantage.
