AI and Data Centre Specialist

We are seeking an experienced AI & Data Centre Technology Specialist to provide deep sector expertise across AI and compute infrastructure, supporting the growth of the UK's AI and Data Centre ecosystem and contributing to trade and investment priorities.This is a part-time (3 days per week), fully remote, 2-year interim contract, operating inside IR35, with a competitive day rate.

The Role As a recognised specialist, you will bring in-depth technical and commercial knowledge of the AI and computer infrastructure landscape. Your expertise will inform policy development, shape strategic priorities, and ensure that practical, commercially focused outputs are delivered across government.

You will work closely with colleagues across Whitehall, overseas teams, and industry stakeholders, providing surge capacity where required and supporting major sector-facing initiatives and events.

Key Objectives

  • Maintain a deep understanding of UK capabilities, policies and strategic positioning within the AI and Data Centre sector.
  • Engage with UK companies, trade associations, accelerators, academia, and government to understand and promote UK offerings.
  • Identify and qualify high-potential growth, export and investment opportunities for the UK AI and Data Centre sector.
  • Provide flexible specialist support across the Strategic Technologies Team and wider directorate, including during periods of economic shock or major events (e.g. London Tech Week).

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead priority AI and Data Centre projects across major global AI markets, with a focus on the EU, Asia-Pacific and Gulf regions.
  • Provide expert input into cross-Whitehall strategies and discussions, particularly working with DSIT.
  • Use strong technical and commercial insight to identify, assess and engage UK companies for export opportunities.
  • Maintain and develop strong relationships across the UK AI ecosystem, including incubators, accelerators, trade bodies, academia, and public sector partners.
  • Develop compelling propositions that showcase UK capability in AI and Data Centres.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of research, learning and development programmes to upskill overseas networks and cross-government colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively with international colleagues, providing specialist insight and supporting key business relationships.

Essential Criteria

  • Significant knowledge and experience in the AI sector, with a deep understanding of the UK AI ecosystem.
  • Good understanding of the Data Centre sector, or the ability to rapidly build knowledge.
  • Demonstrable experience working in the sector (e.g. technology company, academia, accelerator or incubator).
  • Strong customer-facing skills with proven ability to generate leads and deliver projects to completion.
  • Established network and relationship management experience across the AI ecosystem.
  • Excellent collaboration and team-working skills.
