Data Governance & Privacy Counsel

Your new company

A global loyalty and customer benefits business is seeking a Data Governance, Privacy & Enablement Counsel to join its London legal team on a 12-month fixed-term contract, with good potential for extension.

Operating internationally across travel, financial services and retail, the business works with some of the world's best-known brands. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative in-house team at an important stage in the development of its data strategy, supporting the responsible use of customer data, AI and other emerging technologies.

Your new role

Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, you will provide practical legal advice across data protection, privacy and data governance, working closely with colleagues across Risk, Technology, Information Security, Compliance and Commercial teams.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Advising on UK and international data protection, privacy and data governance matters
• Drafting and negotiating complex agreements involving data processing, sharing and international transfers
• Supporting data transformation, customer data and AI initiatives, embedding privacy by design
• Providing day-to-day advice on areas including marketing, profiling, consent, data subject rights and retention
• Advising on data breaches, regulatory notifications and engagement with the ICO

What you'll need to succeed

You will be a qualified lawyer, likely with around 5-7 years' PQE as a guideline, and significant experience advising on data protection and privacy matters within a commercial environment.

You will demonstrate:

• Strong knowledge of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act and PECR
• Strong commercial contracting experience involving personal data and complex data arrangements
• Experience supporting data, digital transformation or data governance initiatives
• Confidence advising on operational privacy issues and personal data breach response
• A pragmatic, collaborative approach with the ability to translate complex requirements into commercially workable solutions
• International privacy experience, particularly across APAC, would be highly advantageous.
• Exposure to AI governance or data commercialisation would also be beneficial.
