Service Engineer

About the Role

  • As a Service Engineer, you will support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of critical electrical power distribution and building control systems. The role combines planned and reactive maintenance, inspection, testing, fault-finding, commissioning and optimisation across LV/HV switchgear, power monitoring, Building Management Systems (BMS), HVAC controls and associated SCADA interfaces.
  • Working primarily on client sites, with remote support where appropriate, you will diagnose and resolve technical issues, support system upgrades and integration, and provide clear recommendations to clients and site teams. The role requires a strong hands-on engineering approach, particularly in operational and critical environments where safety, reliability and minimising downtime are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance, inspection, testing and fault-finding on LV and HV switchgear, switchboards, distribution boards, circuit breakers, protection devices and associated power distribution equipment.
  • Support commissioning of new or modified switchgear, BMS, power monitoring and integrated control systems, including diagnostic testing and verification of system operation.
  • Assist with testing and verification of interfaces between electrical equipment, metering, EPMS, BMS and site-wide SCADA platforms.
  • Analyse system performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, functionality and energy efficiency.
  • Interpret electrical drawings, schematics, single-line diagrams and control drawings to support maintenance, commissioning and fault-finding activities.
  • Provide remote and on-site technical support to clients, clearly explaining findings, remedial actions and improvement recommendations.
  • Provide technical support and training to on-site teams and stakeholders as required.
  • Conduct site assessments to identify defects, risks and opportunities for improvement across electrical, monitoring and control installations.
  • Produce accurate service reports, test records, system logs and documentation of configuration changes following works.

Requirements

  • Strong engineering background with practical experience in electrical power systems, BMS/building automation, or a combination of both.
  • Hands-on experience with LV/HV switchgear and power distribution equipment and/or networked BMS and HVAC control systems.
  • Ability to safely carry out fault-finding, maintenance, testing and diagnostic activities in operational environments.
  • Good understanding of electrical installations, relevant standards, safe systems of work and permit-controlled environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, control schematics and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of Ignition SCADA (Inductive Automation) and experience with platforms such as Trend, Tridium or Schneider is advantageous.
  • Experience in critical facilities, data centres, industrial or infrastructure environments is highly desirable.
  • Relevant electrical, BMS or engineering qualifications/certifications, such as NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, HNC or equivalent, are preferred.
  • HV authorisation, or experience working towards HV competency, is advantageous.
  • CSCS or equivalent.
  • Clean driving licence.
