Lead Data Engineer

Lead Data Engineer

£80,000 - £85,000 + Benefits

Hampshire | Hybrid (1-2 days per week onsite)

I'm working with a well-established, technology-led UK business that's investing heavily in its data platform and analytics capability.

This isn't a role where you'll spend your time moving data around low-code tooling or simply maintaining existing pipelines. They're looking for someone who enjoys building robust engineering solutions, improving platforms and setting the technical direction for how data is delivered across the business.

You'll join at a key stage of their data journey, taking ownership of an Azure-based data platform that's becoming increasingly central to business decision-making. The environment is engineering-led, allowing you to remain hands-on while leading technical standards and mentoring/ managing a small team of Data Engineers.

As Lead Data Engineer, you'll be responsible for:

  • Owning the technical direction of the data platform
  • Designing and building scalable data pipelines using Python and SQL
  • Leading engineering standards, code quality and best practice
  • Mentoring and developing Data Engineers
  • Working closely with stakeholders across technology and the wider business
  • Driving improvements around performance, reliability, monitoring and data quality
  • Helping shape the future roadmap of the platform as the business continues to invest

Tech Environment:

  • Azure
  • Python
  • SQL Server
  • Azure Data Services
  • Data Warehousing
  • Data Engineering & ETL
  • Workflow orchestration (Airflow, Luigi or similar)

You'll probably be someone who:

  • Has experience leading or mentoring Data Engineers
  • Still enjoys writing code and solving engineering problems
  • Has strong Python and SQL experience
  • Understands modern Azure data platforms
  • Can balance technical leadership with hands-on delivery
  • Enjoys improving engineering practices rather than simply maintaining existing solutions

This would suit a Lead Data Engineer looking for more ownership and influence over the technical direction of a growing platform.

Package

  • £80,000 - £85,000
  • Hybrid working (typically 1-2 days onsite, with flexibility for the right person)
  • 30 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Private medical cover
  • Pension
  • Life assurance
  • Ongoing learning & development
  • Additional employee benefits

If you're interested in building a modern data platform, leading from the front and making a genuine impact, I'd love to hear from you. Apply now or get in touch for a confidential conversation.
