Principal Information Analyst - Commissioning
Job summary
The role of Principal Information Analyst is responsible for supporting the Lead Information Analyst to deliver comprehensive analytical support across Commissioning, Costing, Income and Data Quality areas.
This role focuses on managing team development, fostering a positive work culture, and ensuring that team objectives align with Group priorities.
The role will oversee recruitment, retention, and professional development initiatives, ensuring a high-performing and motivated team.
A critical aspect of the role is collaborating with internal stakeholders, including Information Management, Finance and Contracting teams, to gather, analyse, and present data on patient demographics, service usage, and health outcomes. The post holder will lead the creation and maintenance of datasets and reports that support decision-making, aligning services with local and national health priorities.
This is a Group-wide role across multiple sites. The Information Services teams are based at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham Hull and New Beacon House, Scunthorpe. Teams run a hybrid of office and remote working arrangements.
Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the management of the Commissioning Team whilst also ensuring close and effective working/relationships between all staff members
The post holder will be an expert in all matters surrounding the National Tariff Payment System (NTPS), Commissioning Data Sets (CDS) and all other aspects relating to NHS Commissioning and Contracting
The post holder will be responsible for both routine and ad-hoc analysis which supports the trusts commissioning, contracting and management functions. In addition, they shall advise and support colleagues and end users regarding data collection and NHS data definitions to ensure compliance with both national and local standards
The post holder will be responsible for the validation of activity between provider and commissioner. This will involve establishing effective communication links, both internally and externally with commissioners and third parties
The post holder will adhere to trust policies and manage the effective resolution of issues with colleagues and customers
The post holder will investigate and develop new methods of reporting using the latest programming and analytical methodologies that are available
The post holder will maintain an advanced working knowledge of the following software programs and programming languages; Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services and PowerBI

Person Specification
Qualifications
- BSc in Data Management, Business Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Evidence of continuing professional development (e.g., courses in leadership, management, or technical expertise related to Information Management)
- Relevant professional qualifications in Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, SQL certification)
Experience
- Detailed knowledge of healthcare data and how to navigate healthcare data to provide answers to support key operational planning decisions
- Excellent understanding of the extensive range of NHS data sets including Commissioning Data Sets (CDS), Statutory returns and nationally mandated data sets.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all commissioning rules and processes
- Excellent understanding of data quality and its importance in delivering high quality information
- Experience of dealing with a wide range of stakeholders at senior levels internally and externally
- Significant relevant experience within an acute NHS hospital organisation within a relevant role
- Significant experience of delivering complex reporting solutions
- Knowledge of national policy, the NHS long term plan, NHS priorities and national planning guidance
- Experience using Power BI and SSRS reporting tools
- In-depth knowledge of information management systems in the NHS
Skills knowledge and ability
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to design, develop, and implement scalable data solutions
- Proficiency in Data Management tools and programming languages for data interrogation and analysis
- Effective communication and presentation skills, able to translate complex data insights into actionable information for diverse audiences
- Capability to work collaboratively with stakeholders, understanding their needs, and aligning solutions accordingly
- Strong IT skills, particularly in the use of Microsoft Office applications, databases, and Business Intelligence tools
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality outputs
