We're seeking an experienced AWS Data Infrastructure Engineer to join a high-performing data platform team on a contract basis. You'll play a key role in maintaining and optimising a large-scale AWS data ecosystem, supporting Data Engineering workflows, and ensuring secure, reliable, and automated operations.

Key Responsibilities

AWS Data Services & Operations

  • Provision, manage, and maintain AWS data services including S3, Redshift, OpenSearch, Athena, Lambda, Glue, Batch.
  • Monitor and maintain core services such as S3 security scanning, access monitoring, and data ingress/egress patterns.
  • Manage infrastructure supporting Data Engineering workflows, including disaster recovery, performance optimisation, and coding standards.

Infrastructure & Automation

  • Implement and maintain Terraform IaC for consistent, scalable infrastructure.
  • Build and support Apache Airflow orchestration workflows.
  • Support CI/CD and version control workflows using GitLab, including YAML pipeline configuration.
  • Automate tasks using Python, SQL, and Bash.

Security & Governance

  • Manage and monitor IAM, RBAC, and access controls.
  • Apply AWS security best practices across data and compute workloads.
  • Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and continuous process improvement.

Collaboration & Incident Support

  • Work closely with Data Engineering, SRE, and Security teams.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve AWS data infrastructure-related incidents.
  • Contribute to Agile ceremonies and work effectively with stakeholders.

Requirements

Essential Technical Experience

  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS data and compute services:
    S3, Redshift, OpenSearch, Athena, Lambda, Glue, Batch, Step Functions, SQS, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, EMR.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Terraform for IaC.
  • Experience with Airflow for DAG orchestration and monitoring.
  • Strong experience with YAML-based CI/CD, ideally GitLab CI/CD or GitHub Actions.
  • Proficiency with Python, SQL, and Bash for automation and troubleshooting.
  • Solid understanding of:
    • AWS security and IAM
    • RBAC and access workflows
    • AWS networking (VPCs, routing, connectivity)
    • Docker and containerised development
    • Disaster Recovery, backups, snapshots

Desirable

  • Exposure to AWS Neptune or EKS
  • Experience with Jira Service Desk
  • Supporting Data Engineering teams in production environments
  • Previous consulting experience
  • Strong documentation skills (README, Confluence)
