Systems Engineer

Job summary

We are looking for a developer with strong experience in frontend application development, with a focus on creating intuitive, patient safe, and fully accessible user interfaces and user experiences. The role also involves contributing to the design and development of backend APIs, and ensuring seamless functionality by integrating frontend and backend systems through well structured API services.

Main duties of the job

  • System requirements (capture, decomposition, traceability, acceptance criteria).
  • System architecture & interface definition (APIs, data contracts, device/app interfaces.
  • Integration planning and execution (device <-> app <-> backend <-> analytics).
  • Verification & validation planning (test strategy, evidence, release readiness).
  • Risk management & clinical safety support (hazard identification, mitigations, residual risk).
  • Security, privacy, and compliance (secure data handling, encryption, access control).
  • Deployment & operational support: continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD), monitoring, bug fixing, performance/stability)

Person Specification

Education/ qualifications

Essential
  • Degree in Engineering/Computer Science/Applied Science (or equivalent experience)
  • Understanding of systems engineering concepts - requirements, interfaces, verification and validation (V&V)
  • Understanding of secure-by-design and privacy-by-design fundamentals
  • Strong written communication for technical/specification documentation
Desirable
  • Formal systems engineering training e.g., INCOSE-aligned, Model-Based Systems Engineering exposure (MBSE)
  • Training in risk management / safety (medical, human factors, or similar)
  • Experience or training in quality management / regulated development

Experience

Essential
  • Experience working in a clinical vestibular laboratory
  • Experience of working with ear-bud consumer devices
  • Experience of working with flight simulator hardware and electronic control systems
  • Experience defining and delivering end-to-end systems across components/teams
Desirable
  • Digital health / regulated or safety-critical project experience
  • Sensor/IMU or wearable-device integration experience (BLE/device constraints)
  • Experience with data pipelines/analytics requirements and governance

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential
  • System decomposition, interface definition, and trade-off analysis
  • Writing clear requirements and acceptance criteria; managing change control
  • Building V&V plans and test evidence approaches with engineering/scientist teams
  • Risk thinking (failure modes, mitigations, residual risk communication)
Desirable
  • MBSE tools/approaches (even lightweight modelling)
  • Threat modelling familiarity and security requirements definition
  • Understanding of usability/human factors considerations for home use
