Hardware & Systems Technician
Location: Wapping, East London (HQ) – on-site only, no remote work
Contract: Zero-hours contract, paid hourly
Hours: Typically 1–2 days per week variable (days can be 6–12 hours depending on workload)
Rate: £17 per hour
- Start: Immediate
About the Role
We're a small, highly technical team building our own hardware + software platform. We're looking for someone tech-heavy and hands-on to help with:
- Running our in-house system in the field
- Prototyping and testing new setups
- Feeding back what works (and what breaks) to the core team
This will suit a current Computer Science (BSc/MSc) student or a recent graduate who loves Linux, hardware, and experimenting with new tech. It's a great fit if you're interested in startups, want to see how a product is built in the real world, and like the idea of growing into a bigger role over time.
What You'll Be Doing
- Set up and operate our custom technical kit in the field (training provided).
- Run tests using our internal tools and scripts, and log results clearly.
- Help with basic prototyping: trying new hardware arrangements, testing different scripts, and reporting back.
- Capture issues, edge cases and ideas, and share them with the engineering team.
- Assist with hardware setup at HQ (devices, small form-factor PCs, single-board computers, cabling, etc.).
- Travel from our Wapping HQ to different sites as needed – sometimes early starts, sometimes longer days (6–12 hours).
There is strong potential to grow this into more engineering, data, or product work as we scale and as you prove yourself.
Requirements
Technical
- Very tech savvy with strong general technology knowledge.
- Confident using Linux (terminal, SSH, basic system commands, logs).
- Good general understanding of computers, networking concepts and system setup.
- Comfortable installing software, working with command-line tools and following technical instructions.
Practical & Physical
- Based in, or able to easily commute to, East London – HQ is in Wapping.
- Must be able to work on-site at HQ and travel with the team – no remote working.
- Willing and able to work variable field days (6–12 hours) depending on workload.
- Comfortable carrying equipment (approx. 5–7kg) during the day.
- Able to provide your own suitable weather kit / gear, including for warmer conditions and general outdoor work.
- Full UK driving licence with no points (clean licence) – driving is part of the role sometimes.
Eligibility & Profile
- Must already have the right to work in the UK – we cannot sponsor visas or support visa applications.
- Currently studying or recently completed a Computer Science / Engineering degree.
- Bonus experience (nice-to-have, not required):
- Raspberry Pi or similar single-board computers
- Basic scripting (Python, Bash, etc.)
- Working with hardware, sensors, or embedded / edge devices
Interview & Training
- Must be available for interviews on 8th/9th December
- Must be available for in-person interview / training at Wapping HQ on 10th/11th/12th December
- Immediate start after training for successful candidates
