Data Platform Engineer (SQL Server)
Our client is a household name in the UK, leading in media production and digital streaming. They are seeking a Data Platform Engineer to join their Enterprise Platform team. This role is ideal for someone with strong SQL Server expertise , solid infrastructure knowledge , and a passion for automation using ideally PowerShell .
You'll help ensure the stability, security, and performance of mission-critical systems, with a primary focus on SQL Server environments and supporting infrastructure. While experience with cloud platforms and clustering technologies is a bonus , it’s not essential — the team offers training and support to help you close any knowledge gaps.
Key Responsibilities:
- SQL Server Administration: Manage, monitor, and optimize SQL Server environments, including performance tuning, backups, T-SQL scripting, and maintenance tasks.
- Infrastructure Support: Provide operational support for on-premise Windows Server platforms, with a focus on hosting enterprise SQL workloads.
- PowerShell Automation: Create and maintain automation scripts to streamline database and infrastructure operations.
- Clustering Awareness: Understand the principles of Microsoft Failover Clustering; exposure to SQL Server clustering is beneficial but not essential.
- Project Delivery: Contribute to platform engineering projects including system upgrades, infrastructure improvements, and automation initiatives.
- Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, translating business needs into reliable, scalable technical solutions.
- Security & Compliance: Maintain a proactive, security-first mindset in all areas of infrastructure and database management.
- Vendor Management: Liaise with third-party providers and managed services to support and deliver infrastructure solutions.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Strong experience as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise environments.
- Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for automation and system management.
- Solid working knowledge of Windows Server infrastructure .
- Comfortable managing and troubleshooting SQL Server environments.
- Experience working in enterprise IT with a focus on high availability and performance.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Able to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
Desirable Skills (Nice to Have – Not Essential):
- Exposure to Microsoft Clustering (especially SQL Server clustering).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Experience with AWS RDS or other cloud-hosted databases.
- Knowledge of automation tools like Puppet or Ansible .
- Exposure to Linux environments .
- Experience with Azure VMware Solution (AVS) .
- Understanding of Agile working practices such as Scrum or Kanban.
- Familiarity with tools like Jira and LogicMonitor .
