Senior Network Engineer

Role Overview:

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the design, delivery, and ongoing support of complex customer and internal network environments, spanning datacentre, ISP, and on-premises infrastructures. The role involves taking full ownership of network installation projects, providing senior-level escalation support, and working closely with Network Management, Sales, and customers to deliver robust, secure, and scalable solutions. This position also requires proactive network monitoring, maintenance, and participation in a 24x7 support rota, with occasional out-of-hours work to meet customer and operational requirements. This role will entail a mix of office/home-based work as well as customer site visits for installation/support

Key Responsibilities

• To take ownership of installation projects, and liaise with Network Manager, Account Managers and Customers to deliver the installation project

• To carry out ongoing maintenance and development of the DC & ISP network

• Assist sales to answer technical questions for new customer proposals

• Assist with the maintenance of monitoring systems to provide alerting

• Pro-active maintenance relating to software and firmware updates of networking equipment

• Occasional out of hours tasks depending on customer requirements on downtime around support and install tasks

• Included within the 24x7 OOH call rota

• To provide Network support for escalated tickets from Primary Helpdesk Team - remote & onsite if necessary

Required Skills & Experience:

• Strong Networking background and understanding of the following technologies

o Layer 2 understanding (ARP, MAC)

o IP Addressing & subnetting

o Spanning Tree

• Strong understanding of Layer 3 routing protocols

o OSPF

o EIGRP

o BGP

• Strong troubleshooting skills

• VPN Technologies

o IPSEC site to site

o SSLVPN

• Exposure to a range of Firewall vendors such as:

o FortiGate & FortiManager

o Sophos XG

o Cisco ASA / Firepower

o Watchguard

• Demonstratable skills in managing firewalls and relating technologies such as:

o Zone based firewalling

o NAT

o Web, IPS & AV filtering policies

o Device / User authentication integration

• Strong Switching skills and multi-vendor exposure

o Cisco IOS

o HP Aruba

o VLAN creation, management and trunking/tagging

o Cabling/connector types (Copper Cat5/6 & fibre cabling types)

• Wireless installation and support

o Experience with Ubiquiti Unifi and Meraki based deployments

• Experience working with and managing Datacentre networks

• Understanding of different Internet connectivity types – FTTC/FTTP/Leased Line

• Experience with Windows servers and roles such as AD/DHCP/DNS/NPS

• Experience with Hyper-V / VMWare technologies

• Excellent customer facing manner

• Previous experience in a similar IT role

• Cisco CCNP and any other network qualifications would be an advantage

• Full UK Driving license Personal Characteristics
