Specialist Wireless Network Engineer
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and optimise enterprise WLAN solutions across office, industrial, and large-scale enterprise environments.
- Conduct predictive and onsite wireless surveys, RF assessments, and coverage optimisation using tools such as Ekahau and Hamina.
- Perform RF analysis, channel planning, interference mitigation, and capacity optimisation.
- Troubleshoot complex Wi-Fi issues including:
- Authentication failures
- Roaming issues
- RF interference
- Performance degradation
- Coverage gaps
- Develop and maintain Low Level Designs (LLDs) for:
- Wireless LAN
- NAC solutions
- Enterprise connectivity services
- Create accurate Bills of Materials (BoMs) for:
- New deployments
- Refresh initiatives
- Upgrade programmes
- Support Wi-Fi lifecycle management including:
- Hardware refresh
- Firmware/software upgrades
- Capacity planning
- Performance tuning
- Work closely with infrastructure, operations, and platform teams to gather requirements and deliver scalable wireless solutions.
- Support SD-WAN overlay connectivity initiatives and alternative connectivity technologies including:
- 5G networking
- Satellite connectivity
- Disaster recovery networking solutions
- Implement and support secure WLAN authentication mechanisms using:
- 802.1X
- RADIUS
- EAP methods
- Role-based access controls
- Support enterprise NAC platforms including Cisco ISE and Aruba ClearPass.
- Analyse network performance metrics, incident trends, and wireless analytics to improve service reliability and user experience.
- Contribute to engineering standards, best practices, technical documentation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Travel to Client sites across the UK for pre-deployment and post-deployment wireless surveys as required.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience with enterprise wireless networking technologies, particularly:
- Cisco Wireless
- Aruba Wireless
- Deep understanding of:
- RF fundamentals
- Channel planning
- Power optimisation
- Interference mitigation
- 802.11 standards including Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7
- Expertise in WLAN authentication technologies including:
- 802.1X
- EAP authentication methods
- RADIUS
- Role-based access controls
- Experience with:
- Enterprise wireless controllers
- Cloud-managed Wi-Fi platforms
- Policy engines
- Proficiency with wireless survey and design tools:
- Ekahau
- Hamina
- Similar RF planning tools
- Experience with Cradlepoint or similar 5G-enabled networking platforms.
- Strong experience supporting large-scale enterprise Wi-Fi environments.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Cisco ISE
- Aruba ClearPass
- Profiling and NAC solutions
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to interpret:
- Wireless analytics
- Performance data
- Incident trends
