DATA ENGINEER

Location: Solihull, UK (2 days per week onsite)
Rate: £400 per day (Outside IR35)
Duration: 6 months

We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer for a 6-month contract engagement with a leading organisation based in Solihull. The successful candidate will work closely with the wider Data Engineering team, BI Analysts, and BI Developers to deliver robust, scalable data solutions that support business intelligence and analytics functions.

This role focuses on designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines, building data models, and maintaining data warehouses using Microsoft Azure SQL and Power BI. You will play a key part in enabling a data-driven culture, optimising performance, and mentoring junior engineers. The role also involves contributing to and maintaining DevOps pipelines to ensure smooth delivery and deployment of data solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Translate business requirements into scalable and cost-effective data analytics solutions.
  • Design, develop, and test semantic layers or presentation models for use by BI developers and power users.
  • Lead tool and architecture recommendations tailored to specific data requirements.
  • Develop prototypes and analytical models to explore new business insights through iterative development.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate delivery models, whether internal development or third-party engagement.
  • Produce and maintain comprehensive documentation including technical specs, data models, and solution designs.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders including business leads, data SMEs, and third-party partners to ensure successful delivery.
  • Optimise existing solutions and identify performance enhancement opportunities through continuous improvement practices.
  • Align data engineering work with strategic data roadmaps and business goals.
  • Mentor and support junior and associate data engineers through peer reviews, training sessions, and best practice sharing.
  • Support and contribute to DevOps/CI-CD processes to automate and streamline deployments.

Skills

  • Proven experience in data engineering roles within cloud-based environments, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong hands-on experience with SQL, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data modelling.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Azure SQL, Power BI, and related Azure data services.
  • Understanding of DevOps/CI-CD pipelines in a data context.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong documentation, analytical, and mentoring skills.
