Operations Engineer

Operations Engineer (Security & IT)

💷 Salary: £40,000 - £60,000

📍 Location: Remote

I'm supporting a growing managed security and IT services provider that is looking to hire an Operations Engineer who can own technical delivery end to end, from the moment an issue is detected through to a clean resolution.

The business builds its own technology in-house, works alongside a managed services team, and has recently moved into managed IT. This role is for a hands-on engineer who leads with security thinking but is just as comfortable rolling up their sleeves on the practical side.

The role

No two weeks look quite the same. The remit pulls together six strands:

  • Frontline support: picking up a broad mix of 1st and 2nd line IT and security tasks across varied systems, dealing with customers directly to get them back up and running.
  • Incident response: triaging alerts coming through from the SOC, steering customers' internal teams on how to remediate, and stepping in to action fixes yourself.
  • Product work: getting under the bonnet of the in-house software, working to strategic roadmaps that strengthen customers' security posture, and tailoring controls to each customer's needs.
  • Client ownership: running regular check-ins and service reviews with clients large and small, unpacking their security concerns and walking them through the roadmap.
  • Pre-sales: partnering with the sales team on demos and proofs-of-concept for prospective clients.
  • Delivery: running ad hoc security and IT projects from start to finish, keeping internal and external stakeholders aligned.

What they are looking for

  • A 1st class degree in Computer Science, Cyber Security, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Practical, hands-on experience, whether that comes from homelabs, open-source contributions, or looking after live environments.
  • A strong grounding across operating systems, networking, security protocols, scripting, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Sharp problem-solving instincts.
  • Drive and ambition in equal measure.
  • A natural curiosity and the appetite to keep teaching yourself.

Progression

By the three-month mark you would be handling complex client issues on the core agent software independently, holding your own as a security analyst across detection, response and remediation, building and rolling out critical security controls, and starting to take on client accounts.

By twelve months the picture widens: troubleshooting the trickiest controls, leading service reviews for larger clients, presenting to senior stakeholders, contributing to pre-sales work, running sizeable projects, and bringing on more junior colleagues.

Package

  • Salary: £40,000 - £60,000
  • Full support through professional certifications and a structured training programme.
  • The chance to speak at industry conferences and build a name for yourself.
  • A team you can learn from, with backgrounds spanning banking, consulting, high-tech, and cybersecurity.

This role is for someone who enjoys variety, sits where technical detail meets client relationships, and turns security concepts into something both technical and non-technical stakeholders can act on, delivering real value along the way.

Please message me directly if you would like to discuss the role, or feel free to share with someone in your network.
