We have a fantastic opportunity for a Practice Manager who enjoys leading people, driving improvement, solving complex challenges and helping to shape the future direction of a growing organisation.
As Practice Manager, you will be at the heart of our practice, working alongside our GP Partners, Deputy Practice Manager, clinical and administrative teams, and support staff to ensure we continue to provide high-quality, safe and accessible care to our patients.
You will play a key role in developing our services, supporting our workforce, maintaining financial sustainability and CQC compliance, and ensuring the practice remains responsive to the ever-changing NHS landscape.
This is a varied and rewarding leadership role where no two days are the same. You will be responsible for the overall operational management of the practice whilst supporting the Partners in delivering our strategic objectives.

Main duties of the job
You will:
- Provide visible and effective leadership across the organisation.
- Lead, motivate and develop a multidisciplinary team.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the practice.
- Support financial planning, budgeting and business performance.
- Ensure compliance with CQC standards, NHS contractual requirements and information governance regulations.
- Drive quality improvement initiatives and service development.

- Build strong relationships with patients, stakeholders, the Primary Care Network and wider NHS organisations.

Lawrence Hill Health Centre is a thriving GP practice serving a growing list of approximately 12,000 patients. Located close to the centre of Bristol, we are a well-established practice providing a personal, inclusive and family-friendly service to the diverse community around us.
We are a very friendly, dynamic and supportive team of 4 GP Partners, 8 salaried GPs, 1 Paramedic, 2 pharmacists and an experienced nursing team. We are also an established GP training practice and are actively involved in both undergraduate and post graduate medical education.
We have a motivated team who work together to provide the best possible care for our patients, with a strong focus on providing an accessible and responsive service. We work from modern, purpose-built facilities and are a well-established research practice.

Job summary
The Practice Manager will oversee day-to-day operations, support strategic development and ensure the smooth delivery of high-quality patient centred care. Strong leadership, effective communications, sound judgement and a collaborative approach are essential. Experience of managing a practice in primary care is highly desirable but not essential, and we welcome applicants who bring both operational expertise and a genuine commitment to supporting our team and patients.
Main duties of the job
- Provide effective leadership to the practice management and administrative teams.
- Manage HR, recruitment, induction, retention and workforce planning.
- Manage the practice facilities.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, openness and continuous improvement.
- Monitor and maintain contractual requirements, targets and performance indicators.
- Ensure the practice is prepared for inspections, reviews and contractual monitoring.
- Liaise with the ICB, PCN and other relevant NHS Organisations
Job responsibilities
The Practice Manager provides overall business leadership, setting direction, developing the practices systems and processes, leading its people functions and helping to build a financially sustainable practice for the long term. The role leads a small management team and works closely with the GP partners to translate strategic priorities into practical delivery.
The Practice Manager leads on facilities management and health and safety.
The role carries particular responsibility for continuing the CQC inspection readiness work and supporting the practice to maintain high standards of patient care
Leadership, Business Planning and Systems Development
Provide overall leadership of business planning, including monitoring practice performance against QoF, enhanced services and other contractual and national requirements.
Lead the ongoing development of practice systems and processes, ensuring they are implemented, modern and efficient.
Lead and support the practices management team, delegating operational and specialist delivery while retaining oversight of standards and outcomes.
Ensure all practice systems are used effectively to support safe patient care and good information management.
People and HR Management
Provide overall HR leadership across the practice, working closely with teams on day-to-day matters.
Maintain HR policies and processes, reflecting current legislation and good practice.
Apply practice HR policies consistently and fairly, leading recruitment and induction.
Compliance and Quality
Act as the Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO) for the practice.
Ensure the practice meets its obligations under health & safety, safeguarding (Adults and Children) and employment law.
Oversee clinical systems (EMIS Web), IT and Information Governance, including GDPR and data protection compliance.
Lead on incident reporting, significant event analysis and complaints handling.
Keep practice policies under regular review and ensure staff are aware of and trained on them.
Strategic and Partnership Support
Work closely with the GP partners to implement the practices action plan and priorities.
Represent the practice in dealings with the ICB, PCN and other external system wide stakeholders.
Support a positive, open working culture across the practice, in keeping with the practices approach to people management.

Personal Qualities

Qualifications
- Leadership and or a management qualification
- Educated to degree level in healthcare or business
- Associate Member of IGPM in view of becoming a full member
Experience
- Evidence of management or leadership training or equivalent practical management experience
- Managing, supervising and developing staff, including recruitment, induction, performance management and handling staff issues
- Experience of managing day-to-day operations, implementing policies and improving efficiency and quality of services
- Experience of monitoring performance against objective, target and key performance indicators
- Competent use of IT, including Microsoft Office and healthcare/practice management systems
- Ability to lead, motivate and support a diverse team and promote a positive working culture
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, clinicians and external organisations
- Experience of implementing and reviewing policies and procedures
- Previous experience specifically as a Practice Manager, Deputy Practice Manager, Business Manager or Operations Manager in general practice
- Good understanding of primary care/healthcare services and the operational requirements of a GP practice
- Knowledge of NHS Primary care contracts, PCNs, ICBs and relevant NHS policies and frameworks
- Experience with clinical/practice systems such as EMIS Web, Doman, Teamnet or similar systems
- Experience working with CQC requirements and preparing for inspections or regulatory reviews
