Overview
We are seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer to support a Central Government Department's cloud platform and delivery teams. You will work across AWS infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines, using Terraform for infrastructure as code and Kong Konnect for API gateway and management, helping to automate, secure, and scale delivery for a critical digital service. Based in Manchester or Newcastle with one day per week onsite, you'll work within an Agile delivery environment, collaborating closely with engineering and platform teams to improve deployment reliability and pipeline efficiency. This is an opportunity to bring strong DevOps practice to a large-scale, secure-by-design public sector service.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting reliable, automated software delivery
- Develop and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform across AWS environments
- Configure and manage API gateway capabilities using Kong Konnect
- Automate build, test, and deployment processes to improve delivery speed and reliability
- Collaborate with engineering teams to troubleshoot and resolve pipeline and infrastructure issues
- Support the scalability, resilience, and security of AWS-hosted services
- Contribute to DevOps best practice and continuous improvement across delivery teams
Essential Skills
- Experience with Kong Konnect or equivalent API gateway/management platforms
- Strong commercial experience as a DevOps Engineer within AWS environments
- Hands-on experience with Terraform for infrastructure as code
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
- Strong troubleshooting skills across infrastructure, pipelines, and deployments
- Previous experience within the UK Public Sector
- SC Mandatory
Nice To Have
- Experience within Central Government digital services
- Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration (eg Docker, Kubernetes)
- Experience with monitoring and observability tooling
