Biomedical Support Worker (Cellular Pathology)
Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to become a valued member of our team in the Department of Cellular Pathology. The post is primarily based at St James's Hospital; however, there may be a requirement to provide cross-site cover to meet service demands.
Main duties of the job
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced healthcare environment, has excellent attention to detail, and takes pride in supporting high-quality patient care. As part of a busy diagnostic laboratory service, you will contribute to the processing of clinical specimens and support a range of activities across the histology pathway, helping to ensure patients receive timely and accurate diagnostic results. Some of this work may be undertaken under supervision. The postholder will be expected to communicate effectively with colleagues and other healthcare professionals. This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly specialised and forward-thinking department, supporting activities including specimen receipt and accessioning, assisting with specimen dissection, stock management, case assembly, archive services, and other laboratory support duties. The department operates a six-day service between 7:30am and 7:30pm, with both standard and extended-day shift patterns. The successful applicant will be required to work one in four Saturdays as part of the established rota.

The Cellular Pathology Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a forwardthinking, innovative and continually improving service. We were the first laboratory in the UK to digitally scan 100% of surgical slides and also introduced the UK’s first automated tissue sectioners. We are a regional Cellular Pathology Genomics Centre and a pilot site for the Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad, supported by dedicated Transformation and Pathology Technology & Innovation Leads.

What you will bring to the roleWorking as a member of the departmental team you will be expected to perform a range of routine tasks in support of biomedical, scientific and medical staff. You will have problem solving skills that will allow you to make judgements and decisions about job related situations and will be required to communicate information, some of which may be related to patient management and care. Tasks may vary from day to day but examples would include: receiving diagnostic samples into the laboratory, booking cases onto the laboratory information system, preparation of samples/ assisting with specimen dissection, equipment use, preparation of chemical reagents, tissue processing, and safe disposal of clinical / laboratory waste. You may be required to respond to telephone enquiries, assist in monitoring, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, assist in the ordering, receipt and control of consumables and participate in laboratory audit processes.
