Are you interested in the opportunity to join the team of staff within one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe? We are looking for an enthusiastic vascular surgeon to join our vascular and major trauma service as an education and simulation fellow. As faculty for Leeds Vascular Training Centre, you will be encouraged in the application of novel and emerging technologies in Sim Training. This particular post is at Specialty Registrar level ST3+ level and in addition to working toward developing their educational portfolio, will support the delivery of services including participation in 1:9 Vascular and Major Trauma Surgery acute rota.

Main duties of the job

Leeds Vascular Institute (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust) is a thriving busy vascular surgery department and in addition the vascular surgeons participate in the Major Trauma Centre team. The applicant should therefore hold ATLS or an equivalent qualification. Leeds Vascular Institute (LVI) was formed in 2005 with the merger of previously independent units at LGI and SJUH. provides both secondary and tertiary vascular services for the region, including a supra-regional paediatric vascular service. In 2013 the LTHT formed a vascular partnership with the Mid Yorkshire Trust and all elective and emergency vascular surgery for the two Trusts is carried out at the Infirmary, with Mid Yorks consultants participating in the on call and elective rotas.

Job responsibilities

The Leeds Vascular Institute is based at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI). There are many supra-regional and regional services at LTHT which also require vascular surgical input. LGI is a 1103 bed hospital based in the centre of Leeds and has an international reputation for its expertise in a range of specialist services for which the hospital is a regional centre. Central to the site is the Jubilee Building, which contains many services dedicated to helping critically-ill patients including those with major trauma, brain injury and heart disease. The Trauma & Related Services directorate provides care for approximately 20,000 in-patients and 110,000 out-patients on an annual basis. The catchment area covers a population of approximately 780,000 for secondary vascular care, 3 million for the Major Trauma Centre and a tertiary referral population of 5.4 million from across Yorkshire.

The Education and simulation Fellow post is a 1 year post with a view to further extension by mutual agreement. You will be engaged in an educational project and share responsibility with Mr Stansfield for the Regional Vascular Training Centre (VTC) based in Leeds General Infirmary. This facility delivers three sessions of Fellow and/or Consultant supervised surgical simulation training per week. The VTC collaborates on a national and international basis in simulation research: novel simulation materials, model evaluation and extended reality. It also features an array of vascular surgery bench models used in the FEBVS examination. The fellow will be encouraged to assist delivery and development of multitude of regional vascular and resuscitative surgery courses. The fellow will join the resuscitative and vascular surgery middle grade on call rota (1:9) and train in elective and urgent vascular surgery.

Experience

Essential
  • 24 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice
  • Evidence of achievement of ST competencies in surgery (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Surgical Training)

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

Essential
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

Essential
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Evidence of interest in, and experience of teaching
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives

Qualifications

Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCS or equivalent
Desirable
  • ATLS
