Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the operational, clinical and professional leadership and management for Occupational Therapy clinicians in the Directorate of Mental Health (DMH) inpatient services.

To have full line management for a group of OT Team leads including recruitment, appraisals, performance management and training

To identify clinical priorities at both the operational and strategic level for the therapy ensuring the highest standards of clinical and professional practice through professional leadership, clinical supervision, mentorship and practice development.

To undertake direct and indirect specialist clinical work at a high level of expertise and in complex situations. To demonstrate specialist skills in a range of therapeutic interventions

To lead the development of Occupational Therapy across DMH inpatient Services to enable continuous quality improvement in the service provision

To establish and maintain a clear structure for clinical and professional advice and support for Occupational Therapy

To be responsible for the management of staff and be the budget holder for a number of costs centres that encompass multiple complex services

Qualifications

Essential
  • Educated to or working towards masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior management level in a specialist area relevant to Mental Health
  • Diploma/Degree in relevant speciality (OT)
  • Evidence of Supervisory management
  • Advance Qualification and portfolio demonstrating advanced practice
Desirable
  • Leadership and /or management qualification

Knowledge and skills

Essential
  • Indepth understanding of health issues with regard to Mental Health.
  • Ability to demonstrate awareness of best practice and current policy in Mental Health
  • Knowledge of current research and developments in the field
  • Knowledge of professional issues at national, regional and local levels
  • Demonstrate good leadership and team working skills
  • Highly developed and specialised communication skills
  • Ability to communicate sensitive and complex issues
  • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours
  • Ability to identify and employ as appropriate clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour

Experience

Essential
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical at Senior level experience in the field of Mental health
  • Ability to demonstrate in-depth understanding of profound and complex mental health presentations
  • Ability to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of Mental Health conditions and interventions
  • Understanding of valuing people and the needs of this client group
  • In-depth understanding of the role of relevant posts within speciality
  • Experience and abilities in financial management and control through analysis of performance trends taking action early to analyse, explain and improve variations
