Advanced Information Analyst

Job summary

To work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective business analytics and intelligence service, supporting the executive team, divisional operational managers, clinicians and corporate functions through the provision of accurate, timely and high quality information analysis and insights. To provide specialist advice and guidance on data, analysis and measurement within a wide range of domains, with a focus on demand and capacity modelling, and productivity and efficiency analysis and reporting, developing operational and performance management reporting, indicators and dashboards to support effective decision making, business planning, service delivery and improvement.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have the skills and experience to provide in-depth analysis, forecasting and modelling by analysing highly complex, multi stranded data, they will have advanced SQL, Excel, python/R and a high level of wider technical skills with the ability to write complex SQL queries and build reporting dashboards using Power BI.

They will be an expert for their domain but be expected to understand all areas of activity; to develop reports and help end-users to interpret information. They will continually look to enhance the format of information provided and seek to provide innovative solutions to help inform decision making across the Trust.

The post holder will be able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team, they will lead their own projects, working with staff to define specifications, providing information, analysis and reporting that is accurate and complete and delivered within agreed timescales, they will seek advice/guidance from other team members where necessary.

The post holder is expected to be proactive in the development of their own skills and knowledge and will support colleagues with any advice, guidance or training. The ability to work as a flexible team member is essential.

The post holder will represent the Performance and Business Intelligence department at meetings, both internally and externally, deputising as required.

Key Result Areas & Performance:

  • To support operational divisions to ensure effective management decisions in service delivery, development and performance management through the provision of high quality accurate information analysis provided through advanced technical information skills.
  • Understand and interpret highly complex information and analytical requirements, assess the purpose for which outputs are required and support, develop and deliver appropriate solutions using various information query tools and languages.
  • Extract and Analyse highly complex multi stranded data to present meaningful operational and strategic information to a varied audience, determining the best form for communicating /presenting the information ensuring it is comprehensible, relevant and timely.
  • Provide specialist knowledge and expertise across many areas of NHS information and policy, be fully conversant with national and local policies in your area of responsibility, proposing changes where necessary.
  • To produce performance analysis, necessary to meet the delivery of national and local monitoring requirements in line with relevant guidance.
  • Develop and implement advanced analytical models and forecasting tools using Python (and R where appropriate), applying simulation, optimisation, and statistical techniques to support service planning and decision making.
  • Using various visualisation/business intelligence packages ie Power BI, SSRS develop new complex and impactful reports and dashboards, to replace existing reporting mechanisms.
  • To collate and analyse benchmarking data, providing business intelligence about Trust performance in order to inform and support operational, clinical and performance improvements.
  • Provide expert advice and support in the use of IT systems and data analysis using advanced database, query language tools, modelling and report writing.
  • Lead on specific work activities particularly in relation to particular programmes on the Trusts Service Improvement agenda, recommend and develop metrics and set up reporting mechanisms to monitor progress of a variety of initiatives.
  • Provide capacity and demand modelling to support business planning and service improvements.
  • Use in depth specialist knowledge of statistical, forecasting and analytical tools and techniques, to produce meaningful intelligence on which evidence-based decisions can be made.
  • Contribute to the project management of information specific projects, plan, timescale and contribute information and reports to support annual planning cycles. Lead or contribute to working parties and project groups.
  • Support the annual planning and contracting cycle by providing deep dive analysis, with interpretative narrative where required. Provide information on activity to support business planning and assist in the setting of contract plans and development of new KPIs.
  • Proactively improve methods of data extraction, manipulation, analysis and presentation, developing new and existing systems and evaluating alternative options.
  • To seek to maximise the automation of the production of regular reports and analyses to maximise efficiency within the analyst team.
  • Develop and document new procedures to adapt to changing Trust requirements and technology infrastructure.
  • Maintain and further develop understanding of NHS data sets and range of sources of information within and external to the Trust.
  • Lead on specific external data flows as required.
  • Responsible for the development, maintenance and delivery of reporting solutions.
  • To respond to ad-hocs/FOI requests for information ensuring that responses are produced in a timely manner, are accurate and consistent with published information.
  • Develop and maintain robust processes to validate information and improve data quality, in partnership with operational and data warehouse staff.
  • Responsible for development of documentation and maintenance of standard operating procedures for all routine tasks and processes within own area of responsibility.
  • Provide guidance, support and development for staff in the team.
  • To work flexibly and cooperatively within the Performance and Business Intelligence team and carry out any other duties as required.
  • To handle sensitive and personal information in a manner that complies with the Data Protection Act and Information Governance requirements.
  • Provide cover, support and deputise for other senior members of the team. This may include attending meetings and communicating with the Executive team. This requires a full understanding of the work of the department but with a particular focus on demand & capacity modelling, productivity and efficiency analysis across a number of domains including elective, outpatients and diagnostics.


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • Relevant Master's degree or equivalent senior analytical experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable
  • Degree in an analytical subject
  • Membership of a relevant recognised professional body (e.g. AphA)
  • Qualifications/certification in python/SQL/Power BI

Experience

Essential
  • Significant experience in an analytical role within performance/information management
  • Substantial experience extracting, linking and analysing large, complex datasets
  • Experience developing dashboards in reporting/visualisation tools (e.g. python or Power BI)
  • Experience applying analysis to support operational improvement and informed decision-making
  • Experience working with and communicating data to colleagues across disciplines and seniority
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment in a complex organisation with multiple priorities
Desirable
  • Experience working with Linux (Ubuntu) environments

Skills

Essential
  • Expert knowledge of SQL (complex, interlinked models)
