Job summary
The Principal BI Analyst - Cancer is a senior technical role within the Performance and BusinessIntelligence function, accountable for shaping the Trust's strategic approach to cancer datamanagement. The post holder will lead the design, governance, and delivery of cancer intelligenceframeworks, ensuring the Trust not only meets but anticipates national standards, driving continuousimprovement in patient outcomes through data intelligence.
They will act as the Trust's subject matter expert on cancer pathways, influencing executive decision-making, and representing the organisation at regional and national forums. The role requiresadvanced analytical judgement, the ability to resolve highly complex issues, and the authority to setstandards for cancer BI reporting across the Trust.
This role is the Trust's hands on expert for cancer reporting logic and data structures. In collaborationwith data teams, the post holder will design, own, and maintain the SQL logic, tables, and pipelinesthat underpin cancer reporting and national submissions
Main duties of the job
This role provides senior strategic leadership for cancer performance and NHS returns, with accountability for the oversight, quality and interpretation of national cancer datasets including COSD, CWT and RTT. The post-holder leads on complex cancer performance analysis, developing predictive analytics to forecast compliance with national standards and proactively manage risks. They present authoritative performance insights to the Senior Leadership Team, balancing national requirements, clinical priorities and operational realities, and plan and coordinate cancer performance reporting across multiple stakeholders to ensure accuracy, timeliness and alignment with Trust-wide objectives.
In addition, the role leads the optimisation of cancer pathways and business intelligence through digital innovation, including the strategic design of EPIC workflows and the adoption of advanced BI tools. Acting as the Trust's senior BI lead for cancer, the post-holder drives service improvement projects, supports business cases and investment decisions, embeds EDI and QIA governance into service change, and ensures data quality, automation and self-service reporting. They work closely with EPR and Cogito teams to meet internal and national reporting requirements, integrate cancer intelligence into executive dashboards, and provide expert guidance, knowledge transfer and coaching to BI and cancer service colleagues across the organisation.

Key Result Areas & Performance Cancer Performance & NHS Returns
- Provide strategic oversight of NHS cancer datasets (COSD, CWT, RTT), ensuring compliance and proactively identifying risks to national targets.
- Develop predictive analytics models to forecast compliance against national cancer standards, enabling proactive intervention.
- Present cancer performance insights directly to the Senior Leadership Team, ensuring data informs strategic priorities.
- Analyse and interpret highly complex cancer performance data, often with conflicting information, to provide authoritative recommendations that balance national standards, clinical priorities, and operational realities.
- Plan and organise the delivery of cancer performance reporting across multiple stakeholders, ensuring deadlines are met, resources are coordinated, and outputs are aligned with Trust- wide objectives.
Cancer Pathways
- Lead the strategic design and optimisation of EPIC workflows for cancer pathways, ensuring digital solutions anticipate future NHS policy requirements.
- Champion innovation in cancer pathway intelligence, driving adoption of advanced BI tools across multidisciplinary teams.
- Act as the Trusts lead advisor on cancer pathway intelligence, influencing clinical and operational leaders.
Business Intelligence & Service Improvement
- Own delivery of high-impact BI projects that transform cancer service delivery, ensuring measurable improvements in patient flow and outcomes.
- Provide expert input into business cases and strategic investment decisions, ensuring cancer priorities are embedded in Trust planning.
- Establish governance frameworks that embed EDI and QIA assessments into all cancer service changes, ensuring compliance and equity.
- Design systems to ensure data meets requirements for accuracy, completeness, consistency, reliability, and timelines.
- Focus on utilising technology for automation and ensure adoption of self service reporting.
- Work with EPR and Cogito teams to ensure all data elements are captured for internal and national reporting requirements.
Operational & Strategic Support
- Act as the senior BI lead for cancer across divisions, aligning divisional objectives with Trust- wide cancer strategy..
- Drive integration of cancer performance data into executive dashboards, enabling real-time visibility and accountability.
Knowledge Transfer & Support
- Provide technical walkthroughs for BI/Performance and Cancer Services; maintain run books and handover guides.
- Where required, coach a Band 6/analyst working on cancer reporting components (no formal line management mandated).
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Educated to Master's degree level or equivalent relevant postgraduate professional qualification, or equivalent knowledge gained through experience
- Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
- Detailed and expert knowledge of NHS cancer datasets (COSD, CWT, RTT) and cancer KPIs.
Experience
- Significant NHS service experience in an analytical/technical role
- Significant experience (at a senior level) of NHS cancer returns and compliance with national standards (2 week wait, 31 day, 62 day targets).
- Experience of EPIC (or equivalent EPR) workflows, particularly cancer pathway modules (diagnostics, MDT coordination, treatment planning).
- Experience of managing organisation wide projects across a large, complex NHS organisation including technical, operational and clinical groups.
- Significant experience of extracting data, producing dashboards, and reports, and adding value to them for all tiers of a large or complex organisation.
Skills
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, Access) and BI tools (e.g., SQL, Power BI, Tableau).
- Expert knowledge of NHS cancer service structure, national standards, and proposed changes.
- In depth specialist knowledge of NHS cancer KPIs and ability to design/implement policies and procedures to meet them.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present cancer performance data clearly to senior stakeholders.
- Power BI (or equivalent) visualisation tools
