Student Systems Developer

We are currently seeking to appoint a Student System Developer to support existing and new programmes.

The Student Systems Developer will be responsible for the development, integration, and ongoing support of the School’s student-facing systems, including the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), student records, e-assessment, and digital learning platforms. The role will ensure that these systems are efficient, user-friendly, accessible, and capable of supporting high-quality teaching, learning, and student experience.

Key Responsibilities

System Development & Maintenance

- Develop, configure, and maintain core student systems (e.g., VLE, student records systems, assessment platforms, portals).

- Design and implement new features, modules, and integrations with other University systems.

- Ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements, including accessibility, GDPR, and data protection.

- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve technical issues, escalating to third-party vendors where appropriate.

Digital Learning & Student Support Systems

- Support academic and professional services staff with the effective use of student systems (e.g., Moodle, Panopto, Turnitin, JotForms, e-Assessment tools).

- Provide technical expertise in the development of workflows, data integrations, and online learning resources.

- Contribute to the implementation of digital transformation projects, ensuring scalability and sustainability.

Collaboration & Training

- Work closely with Learning Technologists, Academic staff, Registry, and IT Services to deliver excellent digital and student services.

- Provide training and documentation for staff and students on system use and best practice.

- Liaise with external suppliers, auditors, and partners to ensure robust support and compliance.

Quality Assurance & Reporting

- Monitor system performance, reliability, and usage, producing reports and recommendations.

- Support quality assurance processes related to student systems and data integrity.

- Keep up to date with sector developments, emerging technologies, and best practices in student systems management.

Key Systems the Role Will Support

- Develop, customise, and maintain University websites and portals using WordPress, PHP, HTML, CSS, and relevant frameworks.

- Ensure web systems are accessible, responsive, and integrated effectively with core student systems.

- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for website-related issues.

- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to deliver engaging, user-friendly web content.

Web Development & Support

- Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) – customisation, integration, plugin development, and support.

- Student Records System – integrations with enrolment, progression, and assessment workflows.

- Assessment & Feedback Tools – Turnitin, e-Assessment platforms, and related integrations.

- Video & Content Management Systems – Panopto, WordPress, website and intranet platforms.

- Survey & Feedback Tools – EvaSys, JotForms, E-Forms, and similar platforms.

- Authentication & Integration Services – API integrations, SSO (Single Sign-On), and system interoperability with University IT infrastructure.

Person Specification

Essential:

- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

- Proven experience developing and supporting student systems, VLEs, or equivalent enterprise applications.

- Strong proficiency in programming and web technologies, including:

  • PHP, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript
  • Python, Node.js
  • Laravel and other PHP frameworks
  • WordPress (customisation, plugins, integrations)

- Experience integrating systems using APIs and web services.

- Knowledge of relational databases (e.g., MySQL, SQL Server) and data structures.

- Understanding of accessibility standards, data protection, and information security.

- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to train and support non-technical users.

Desirable:

- Experience in Higher Education or Further Education environment.

- Knowledge of additional e-learning and student systems such as Panopto, Turnitin, EvaSys, JotForms, and assessment platforms.

- Familiarity with cloud hosting environments (e.g., AWS, Azure).

- Experience with version control (e.g., Git/GitHub) and agile development practices.

- Project management skills and experience delivering system upgrades or new implementations.
