We are partnering with a leading UK organisation within the rail sector to hire a Lead Data Scientist to join their growing Data Science & AI function. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on impactful, real-world AI and machine learning solutions that drive safety, efficiency, and sustainability at scale.
The Role
As a Lead Data Scientist, you will act as a senior technical expert, leading the end-to-end delivery of data science and AI solutions—from concept and prototyping through to production. You will collaborate closely with data engineers, developers, and business stakeholders to build scalable, production-ready solutions, while also mentoring junior team members and contributing to best practices across the function.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of machine learning and AI projects end-to-end (concept → POC → production)
- Design, develop, and deploy scalable data science solutions aligned to business needs
- Work closely with engineers and product teams to integrate models into pipelines and platforms
- Translate complex business problems into practical analytical solutions
- Ensure best practices in coding, testing, documentation, and model governance
- Communicate insights clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Mentor and support junior data scientists
- Contribute to a collaborative, innovative, and high-performing team environment
Key Requirements
- Strong experience delivering end-to-end data science / ML solutions in production environments
- Advanced Python skills with solid coding standards (testing, version control, clean code)
- Experience working with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
- Hands-on experience with LLMs / Generative AI applications
- Experience building and deploying scalable solutions (CI/CD, pipelines, workflows)
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience working in Agile environments
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outputs
