£550 - £600 (umbrella) per day dependent on experience

Department: ISD - Allocated 100% to Network Modernisation programme

Duration: Long term strategic programme with an initial 6-month contract with opportunity to extend for the right candidate

Main Purpose of the Job:

We are seeking a skilled Infrastructure Automation Engineer to support a large-scale network modernisation programme for one of the world's leading Universities. This is an exciting opportunity to join the programme at initiation. The right candidate will drive forward the automation workstream that underpins the largest network modernisation programme across the UK higher education sector. Core responsibilities include design, implementation, testing of automated Network Infrastructure development that will enable scalable, secure, automated, resilient network services across the University's estate.

Reports To: Portfolio Delivery Manager

Key Responsibilities:

Project Delivery

  • Design and implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, Ansible and GitHub.
  • Automate provisioning and configuration of network infrastructure (eg, Firewalls, load balancers, VPNs, SD-WAN).
  • Collaborate with the Network Architecture and DevOps team to automate self-service infrastructure configuration.
  • Integrate infrastructure automation into CI/CD pipelines for seamless deployment.
  • Development of reusable patterns, modules, templates and playbooks that ensure consistency, auditability, and rapid service enablement.
  • Monitor infrastructure/cyber and automate remediation workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with security and governance policies through automated controls.
  • Document infrastructure designs, automation workflows, and operational procedures.

Experience

  • Working on large scale Network transformation programmes.
  • Technical lead of infrastructure-as-code (IaC), automation, deployment, configuration, management and scaling.
  • Managing delivery alongside external partners and managing senior stakeholders.
  • Building automated pipelines and orchestration frameworks for hybrid environments (on-premises, private/public cloud) including automated testing.
  • Expert in industry-standard software and project methodologies and tooling (eg, SAFe (Agile), Jira, Confluence).
  • Expert in Network systems particularly Aruba technology stack.
  • Solid understanding of Application delivery control.

Essential Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  • Network infrastructure automation using DevOps practices.
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • Terraform, Ansible, or similar IaC tools
    • CI/CD tools (eg, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps)
    • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, routing, VPNs, Firewalls).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (eg, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
  • Scripting skills including Python and React.
