SQL DBA - Local Authority Exp
Job Title: SQL Database Administrator Location: London (Hybrid - 2 days on-site per week)Contract: 6 months (Inside IR35)Rate: £450-£500 per day Start: ASAP
We are seeking a highly hands-on SQL Database Administrator to join our team and support business-critical systems across the council. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a problem-solving environment, enjoys getting deep into technical troubleshooting, and can work confidently across SQL Server, scripting, and SSIS packages.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and resolve complex SQL Server issues including performance bottlenecks, blocking, query inefficiencies, and job failures
- Develop, review, and troubleshoot T-SQL scripts, stored procedures, indexes, and SQL Jobs
- Maintain and support SSIS packages, including deployment, error handling, and optimisation
- Oversee backup/restore operations, recovery models, and environment health monitoring
- Support patching, upgrades, and production deployments
- Work closely with application teams to analyse issues and implement fixes or performance improvements
- Ensure all database activities adhere to council security and compliance standards
- Provide clear documentation, runbooks, and knowledge transfer as needed
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong, hands-on expertise with Microsoft SQL Server (2016-2022)
- Proven ability to troubleshoot SQL issues at root cause level
- Excellent T-SQL scripting skills (queries, stored procedures, functions, optimisation)
- Solid experience building, maintaining, and troubleshooting SSIS packages
- Understanding of performance tuning techniques (execution plans, indexing, statistics, Query Store)
- Experience with SQL Agent jobs, alerts, error handling, and monitoring tools
- Backup and recovery experience (full/diff/log, PITR, restore strategies)
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments with multiple priorities
