Niagara Server-Side Integration Specialist (Tridium, Trend & SET)

Job Description:

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Niagara Server-Side Integration Specialist to support, develop, and enhance integrations across Tridium, Trend, and SET (System Engineering Tool) building management systems (BMS). This role is responsible for creating robust server-side solutions within the Niagara Framework (N4) that enable efficient data exchange, automation workflows, and system interoperability.

The specialist will work across a range of building systems and assets including HVAC, lighting, energy metering, environmental monitoring, and other smart building technologies ensuring seamless integration and optimized performance across platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

Niagara Framework Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain server-side components and logic within the Niagara N4 platform.
  • Build and deploy custom services, APIs, and data flows to support complex multi-system integration requirements.
  • Configure and optimize Niagara stations, drivers, network settings, and performance for large-scale environments.

MQTT & API Integration

  • Create, configure, and maintain MQTT brokers, topic structures, and secure publish/subscribe communication.
  • Develop RESTful APIs, JSON endpoints, and integration services to exchange data from Tridium, Trend, or SET-configured systems to external platforms.
  • Build automated data pipelines enabling cloud connectivity, analytics integration, and third-party system communication.

Tridium, Trend & SET BMS Support

  • Integrate and manage Trend controllers, SET-engineered logic, and system data points within the Niagara Framework using compliant drivers and protocols.
  • Use Trend SET to review, configure, engineer, and troubleshoot Trend IQ/Vision/XT systems as part of wider Niagara or cross-platform integrations.
  • Commission, configure, and diagnose issues within Tridium, Trend, and SET environments.
  • Ensure reliable communication, data synchronization, and cross-platform compatibility between Niagara, Trend, and SET-generated strategies.

BMS Asset & System Knowledge

  • Apply strong understanding of building systems and assets commonly connected to BMS, including:
  • HVAC systems (AHUs, FCUs, chillers, boilers, VAVs, VRF systems, pumps, valves, actuators)
  • Lighting control systems
  • Energy metering, power monitoring, and utility integration
  • Environmental sensors (temperature, humidity, CO2, IAQ sensors)
  • Critical systems such as alarms, fire interfaces, or access integrations (where applicable)
  • Ensure accurate point mapping, data modelling, and integration logic that reflect real-world mechanical and electrical system behaviour.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers to understand asset functionality and data requirements.

Data Modelling & Architecture

  • Develop standardized data tagging structures (e.g., Haystack, Niagara tagging) for enhanced data quality and interoperability.
  • Create normalized data schemas for HVAC, lighting, energy, and environmental systems.
  • Design scalable, maintainable system architecture for multi-building or enterprise deployments.

Security & Compliance

  • Implement secure protocols, certificate management, and encryption for MQTT, API endpoints, and Niagara services.
  • Ensure all integrations comply with enterprise IT security, data governance, and cybersecurity standards.

Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement

  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to Niagara stations, drivers, communication protocols, SET logic, and system integrations.
  • Monitor system performance, optimize data flow, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Produce documentation, diagrams, and handover materials.

Collaboration & Technical Leadership

  • Work closely with BMS engineers, IT teams, mechanical engineers, and external integration partners.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for Niagara, Trend, SET, Tridium, and building asset integration strategies.
  • Provide training, support, and expert advice to internal teams.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong proficiency with Tridium Niagara N4, including station design, module configuration, and driver integration.
  • Working experience with Trend BMS systems and Trend SET engineering software (including strategy review, point configuration, and controller logic).
  • Proven ability to configure MQTT brokers and design scalable publish/subscribe architectures.
  • Experience developing REST APIs, JSON services, and server-side data integrations.
  • Solid understanding of HVAC, lighting, metering, and other building systems commonly integrated with BMS.
  • Knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, MQTT, oBIX, and related communication protocols.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across multi-system environments including SET-based Trend systems.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Niagara N4 Certification (TCP or N4 Technical Certification).
  • Experience working with cloud-based IoT/BMS analytics platforms.
  • Knowledge of energy optimisation, smart building systems, or digital twin environments.
  • Background in mechanical, electrical, or controls engineering.
  • Onsite experience would be helpful.
