Automation Engineer

We are delivering a strategic automation and operational resilience programme, scaling an internally built AWS‐based automation platform designed to remove manual controls, Excel‐based EUDAs, and operational risk at scale.

This is a senior, hands‐on technical leadership role where you’ll shape the architecture of high‐impact automation solutions, mentor engineers, and partner closely with Operations and senior stakeholders to materially reduce operational risk.

What You’ll Do

  • Own and shape the technical architecture for automation solutions on AWS, using serverless and event‐driven patterns
  • Provide technical leadership and hands‐on guidance to mid‐level automation engineers
  • Balance architectural decisions with business outcomes, focusing on resilience, scalability, and speed‐to‐value
  • Review designs and code to ensure quality, security, and maintainability
  • Act as a senior technical point of contact for delivery leadership and stakeholders
  • Partner with Operations, Technology, and Business teams to understand processes, risks, and control requirements
  • Build and maintain an inventory of manual processes, EUDAs, and operational checks, aligned to key controls
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy automated operational checks and processes
  • Increase automation coverage across manual processes, checklists, and EUDAs
  • Integrate monitoring, alerting, and scheduling tools (e.g. Control‐M, Geneos, Datadog)
  • Deliver Health Dashboards providing real‐time operational resilience insights for senior stakeholders
  • Work in an agile delivery model, contributing to sprints, planning, demos, and continuous improvement
  • Ensure solutions meet security, resilience, and SDLC standards with strong documentation and version control

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience in cloud architecture (AWS preferred)
  • Deep understanding of serverless architectures (Lambda, event‐driven design)
  • Experience with container platforms (Kubernetes / EKS)
  • Strong CI/CD and secure software delivery experience
  • Proven system integration capability (APIs, data pipelines, scheduling tools)
  • Ability to align technical design with business outcomes
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams
  • Strong Java development experience for automation

Nice to Have

  • Background in financial services or regulated environments
  • Exposure to operational risk, controls, audits, and evidence automation
  • Experience delivering service or business health dashboards for senior leadership
  • Knowledge of observability, monitoring, and alerting best practices (SRE / production operations)
  • Experience modernising manual or Excel‐based (EUDA) processes
  • Strong stakeholder management across Operations, Technology, and Controls
