Control Engineer / Automation Engineer (Field-Based)
Salary: £30,000 - £43,000 + Company Car + Bonus + Excellent Benefits
Location: Field-based across the Midlands, covering West Midlands, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Oxfordshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Engineers are typically allocated customers within their local region to minimise travel where possible.
The Opportunity
Our client is a leading specialist in industrial automation, controls and machine vision solutions, supporting manufacturing businesses across a wide range of industries.
Due to continued growth, they are looking to recruit a Control Engineer / Automation Engineer to join their expanding engineering team.
This is an excellent opportunity for either a graduate with industrial automation or PLC exposure, or an experienced Controls Engineer, looking to develop their career with a business that offers excellent training, varied projects and genuine long-term progression.
Working in a field-based role, you will provide technical support, fault finding, PLC programming, commissioning and optimisation of automated manufacturing equipment across customer sites throughout the Midlands.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and resolve PLC, controls and automation faults on automated production equipment.
- Modify, develop and optimise PLC programs to improve machine performance, reliability and efficiency.
- Support commissioning, installation, upgrades and continuous improvement projects.
- Fault find electrical control systems and automated machinery.
- Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication networks.
- Support and optimise machine vision inspection systems.
- Produce technical reports and documentation following customer visits.
- Work closely with customer maintenance and engineering teams to minimise downtime and improve production performance.
- Travel to customer sites throughout the Midlands region.
About You
We're keen to hear from engineers at different stages of their career, with salary offered depending on experience.
You may be:
- A Graduate Controls or Automation Engineer with an industrial placement or some commercial PLC experience.
- A Junior Controls Engineer looking to develop your technical skills.
- An experienced PLC or Automation Engineer seeking a varied field-based position.
You will ideally have:
- A qualification in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Automation, Mechatronics or a related engineering discipline.
- PLC programming, diagnostics or fault-finding experience gained through industry, placements or university projects.
- Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication skills and confidence working directly with customers.
- The ability to work independently and manage your own workload.
- A full UK driving licence.
Technical Experience
PLC Platforms
Experience or exposure to any of the following would be advantageous:
- Siemens S7-1500
- Rockwell ControlLogix
- Rockwell CompactLogix
- Mitsubishi PLCs
- Schneider Modicon PLCs
- Omron NX/NJ PLCs
Automation & Controls
Knowledge or experience of:
- Automated manufacturing machinery
- Industrial automation systems
- Electrical control systems
- HMI and SCADA systems
- Commissioning and fault finding
Industrial Networks
Experience with one or more of:
- Profinet
- Ethernet/IP
- Profibus
- Other industrial communication protocols
Machine Vision (Highly Desirable)
Experience with machine vision systems including:
- Cognex
- Keyence
- Other industrial vision platforms
Including:
- System configuration
- Fault finding and diagnostics
- Inspection optimisation
- Production support
