Data Coach (Engineering & Analytics)

Makers’ mission is to build a better future. We transform lives and organisations through pioneering training that keeps pace with global tech shifts.

Tech and AI are reshaping jobs, the economy and society. Making this transition effective, equitable, and inclusive will be one of the biggest drivers of human wellbeing into the next century. We believe talent is everywhere, and the future belongs to those who can adapt and learn.

We’re here to help people do exactly that: across tech and in every job being remade by AI. As a committed B-Corp with some of the strongest training results in the country, we combine heart and hard-won expertise to create learning experiences that genuinely change lives.

About the Role

As a Data Coach at Makers, you will be the subject matter expert responsible for delivering our Data Engineering and Data Analytics training. We are looking for a practitioner with a solid data background who wants to apply their deep technical expertise to education.

You will join a team of industry professionals to deliver training that equips learners with the skills to build robust data pipelines, perform complex statistical analysis, and manage the end-to-end data lifecycle. You will be responsible for ensuring our learners graduate with the industry-standard skills required to join modern data teams immediately.

As a Person You Are

  • A True Data Practitioner: You have a strong background in data engineering or advanced analytics. You have "lived" the data lifecycle and understand the nuances of managing data at scale.
  • Technically Versatile: You are as comfortable explaining ETL pipelines and Data Warehousing as you are teaching Statistical Analysis and Probability.
  • Fascinated by Learning: You have a growth mindset and enjoy continuously developing yourself and others. You are excited by the challenge of explaining complex concepts like "batch vs. stream processing" to people just starting their journey.
  • A "Tech and People" Person: You care about others and can empathise with learners who are under pressure. You value trust, transparency, and open feedback.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Deliver Immersive Technical Training (Data & Engineering)

  • You will run workshops, provide 1:1 support, and facilitate learning for cohorts ranging from Level 3 Data Analysts to Level 4 Data Engineers.
  • You will teach core technical skills, specifically focusing on Python and SQL, ensuring learners understand industry-standard engineering practices.
  • You will teach the end-to-end data lifecycle, including ETL processes, data modelling, and building/managing data warehouses (using tools like DBT).
  • You will cover essential Data Statistics, helping learners understand probability, distributions, and hypothesis testing to drive accurate decision-making.

Curriculum Development and Innovation

  • You will apply your specific data industry experience to keep our curriculum cutting-edge. This involves iterating on materials to reflect modern stacks (e.g. cloud data engineering, Apache Airflow, Kafka).
  • You will collaborate with the Curriculum team to design highly effective educational experiences that give learners the AI and Data skills they need for the future market.

Support and Coach Learners

  • Coach: Through active listening and questions, you’ll help learners reflect on their learning and debug their own solutions.
  • Mentor: You will use your professional experience to model the skills and behaviors necessary to be a successful data professional.
  • Technical Expert: You will provide expert feedback on code, architecture, and analysis.
  • Emotional Support: You will support learners through the intensity of the bootcamp, helping them manage stress and financial pressure.

Be a Technical Expert within Training

  • You will maintain your own technical edge, staying up to date with the latest trends in AI, Data Engineering, and Cloud Infrastructure.

What Success Looks Like

  1. Learner experience: Ensuring learners view their experience as demanding but rewarding, measured via NPS.
  2. Learner success: High rates of course completion and achievement of learning objectives.
  3. Learner outcomes: Learners demonstrate confidence in Python, SQL, ETL, and Statistical concepts, ready for "Day 1" on the job.
  4. Employer satisfaction: Partners understand what we teach and see the high quality of the talent we produce.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

We are open to all individuals who feel they can perform the role. However, for this position, we are specifically looking for a candidate with a proven background in Data.

  • Solid Data Background: You must have professional experience as a Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or a technically-focused Data Analyst.
  • Core Engineering & Scripting: Extensive experience with Python and SQL. You must be comfortable teaching engineering best practices (clean code, testing, version control) within a data context.
  • Data Engineering Lifecycle: Practical experience in designing and implementing ETL processes, data modelling, and managing data warehouses (experience with DBT is a plus).
  • Pipelines & Orchestration: Familiarity with building data pipelines, covering batch processing (e.g., Apache Airflow) and an understanding of stream processing (e.g., Kafka/Spark).
  • Data Statistics & Analytics: A strong grasp of statistical concepts (distributions, regression, significance testing) and the ability to teach how to derive insights from raw data.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Solid expertise in cloud platforms (AWS ideally; Azure is desirable) and an understanding of DevOps practices (Terraform, Docker).
  • Excitement for Education: The enthusiasm to do education really well. You possess the skill of thinking from the perspective of someone who doesn't know something yet, and taking sensible actions to help them grow.
