Consultant in Cytopathology - Diagnostic Cytology

Job summary

This is a full time (10PA) Consultant Cytopathologist post at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based the Cytopathology Department at the Oxford Road campus reporting diagnostic cytopathology.

The 1 Oxford Road-based Consultant Cytopathologist, 3 Consultant Histopathologist/Cytopathologist, and 7 Consultant BMS work in 2 subspecialist teams (Cervical and Diagnostic Cytopathology). In addition, 3 Oxford Road Histopathologists report Cytopathology within their Histopathology subspeciality. This is a substantive post.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with other consultant colleagues, be responsible for providing subspecialised cytopathology services for its clinical users (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and local General Practices). This may include review of cytopathology of patients who are referred in to any of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust sites for further investigation or treatment from other hospitals. The appointee will participate in cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) in line with their areas of subspecialisation.

Qualifications

Essential
  • Full and Specialist Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice (or eligible for registration within 6 months of date of interview)
  • If a newly qualified UK trainee the applicant must ALSO be a holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
  • FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification
Desirable
  • MD or PhD Equivalent

Research

Essential
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate

  • Evidence of taking initiative & past participation in research
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Ideas for future research whilst in post

Clinical Experience

Essential
  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the subspecialty areas of the post
  • Possess broad clinical experience in the general aspects of the post plus any specific experience required for the post
