Senior AWS Cloud Engineer | Abingdon | £75,000pa plus bonus & benefits | 1 day onsite per week:

MARS has partnered a global consultancy to hire in a Senior AWS Cloud Engineer to join a talented IT function. This strategic delivery partners work, spans both private and public enterprises on a global basis, delivering real impactful change, improvements and transformation for their clients. With an amazing company culture and values, this business really puts its staff at the forefront of what they do.

My client is building multi-cloud platform department, and their estate today is Microsoft Azure; but they're establishing a presence in Amazon Web Services (AWS) next, with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to follow. Therefore, they are looking for an engineer whose deepest expertise is in AWS — the AWS expert who will lead the design and build of the AWS landing zone and set the standards we carry into it. Because that AWS environment does not exist yet, your day-to-day work will initially be in Azure, and you will need to be fully willing to design, build and support in Azure while the AWS platform is established. This is not a people management role. rather, the Senior Cloud Engineer is the go-to expert: the person who solutionize complex requirements, leads on architecture decisions, represents the cloud function in project and client conversations, and sets the technical benchmark for the rest of the team.

Our client is looking for an AWS Cloud Engineer with the following skills:
  • SME-level experience designing, building and operating production workloads in Amazon Web Services (AWS), ideally including the foundation of a new AWS environment (landing zone, multi-account structure, identity, networking and guardrails).
  • Willingness to learn and gain the ability to deliver in Microsoft Azure. Our AWS environment is not yet built, so a significant share of early work will be designing, building and supporting Azure workloads. Prior Azure experience is a strong advantage, but a clear commitment to working across both platforms is essential.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code: strong, hands-on proficiency in Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation or CDK for provisioning and managing AWS resources, with the ability to work in Bicep for our Azure estate. IaC must be the default approach, not an occasional tool.
  • CI/CD pipeline expertise: proven experience building and maintaining pipelines in Azure DevOps and/or GitHub Actions, ensuring automated, repeatable infrastructure deployment.
  • Scripting proficiency: Python, PowerShell and the AWS and Azure CLIs used regularly for automation, operational tasks, and reducing manual intervention.
  • Integration services: proficient in AWS integration services (EventBridge, SQS, SNS, Step Functions, Lambda and API Gateway) and able to work with Azure Integration Services (Logic Apps, Service Bus, Event Grid and API Management) for integration design and implementation.
  • AWS platform foundations: experience with multi-account design using AWS Organizations and Control Tower, IAM and IAM Identity Center, VPC networking, and security services such as GuardDuty, Security Hub and CloudTrail.
  • API Development: solid experience with SOAP and REST APIs, including design, development, and secure management.
  • Experience with GitHub version control, including branching strategies and code review practices.
Any AWS certifications will enhance your application: AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate (or AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate); AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional; AWS Certified Security - Specialty — or demonstrable equivalent security engineering experience with a commitment to achieve this certification.

Our client is offering a highly competitive salary and generous benefits package includes: Life Assurance, Income Protection, pension contributions and 27 days holiday (not including bank holidays). They also operate a profit share scheme so that our people share in the success of the business. The profit share bonus is based on company performance and typically paid out in March and September.

Joining this impressive business also brings many social benefits. They have a full social calendar with Spring activity days, Christmas events, a 2-day Summer event and 4 sponsored weekends a year.
