Ruby on Rails Developer
Company Description
Materials Market is a managed marketplace for bulky construction materials. We’re fixing a fragmented, opaque market where pricing is political and access is unequal — building a fair, transparent system where customers and suppliers trade on equal terms.
We turn a network of merchants and distributors into one simple way to buy heavy, first-fix materials. Customers — from DIYers to tradespeople — get competitive, market-informed prices and reliable delivery through a single platform. Suppliers keep control, choosing the orders that suit their branches, fleets and margins.
We’re backed by Fuel Ventures and Active Partners, alongside a strong group of angel investors. Our board includes James Mackenzie (former Managing Director of Travis Perkins) and Thomas Studd (former Partner at Vitruvian Partners).
Role Description
We’re hiring a Ruby on Rails Developer to join a small, high-performing team and ship product changes end-to-end. You’ll work in a Rails codebase, building features across backend and frontend as needed, partnering closely with non-technical teams, and owning delivery, quality, and outcomes.
We run lean, with minimal ceremony and a meeting-light culture (no daily stand-ups). You’ll have autonomy, direct access to leadership, and real ownership of what ships.
What you’ll do
- Build and ship features in a Ruby on Rails monolith.
- Contribute towards both new feature development and green-field rebuilds of core parts of our platform.
- Deliver work end-to-end: from business problem → solution design → development → release.
- Debug issues, improve reliability, and raise code quality.
- Work pragmatically across the stack (Ruby, JavaScript, CSS, SQL).
- Use AI-assisted / agentic development tools to write and review code, while maintaining high quality.
Must haves
- Strong Ruby and Ruby on Rails experience with evidence of shipping production work.
- Full-stack mindset; backend leaning.
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and making pragmatic decisions.
- Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools.
Nice to haves
- Architecture experience.
- CI/CD experience.
- Infrastructure / DevOps exposure.
Working pattern & location
- Fully remote, flexible working hours, focused on output.
- Quarterly in-person two-day hacks.
- Occasional attendance in London office encouraged.
