Social & Digital Communities Specialist

Contract: Permanent
Location: North West London (NW10)
Hours: 35 hours per week
Salary: Up to £31,500 per annum, depending on experience
Closing Date: Sunday 25 October 2026 at midnight

Every dog and cat in need deserves expert care, compassion and the chance to thrive.

At Mayhew, we're a passionate team of around c65 staff and c220 volunteers working to improve the lives of dogs, cats and the communities that care for them. Through veterinary services, rescue and rehoming, community support programmes and education, we make a real difference every day.

We're looking for a creative and enthusiastic Social & Digital Communities Specialist to grow Mayhew's online presence, tell powerful stories and turn audience engagement into meaningful supporter action.

This is an exciting, hands-on role for someone who lives and breathes social media and loves creating engaging content. You'll manage Mayhew's social channels, create compelling digital content, grow and engage our online communities, and inspire people to donate, volunteer, adopt, fundraise and support our work in other ways.

Our Way of Working

This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to be at the heart of Mayhew's work rather than behind a desk.

To create authentic and engaging content, you'll spend much of your time on site and out in the community, capturing the stories that showcase Mayhew's impact. You might be sharing the journey of an animal in our care, highlighting the work of our veterinary team, meeting volunteers from our TheraPaws programme, supporting community events, or creating content around fundraising campaigns and awareness initiatives.

You'll build strong relationships across the charity, working closely with frontline teams, volunteers and supporters to uncover compelling stories and bring them to life across social and digital channels.

While we offer flexibility, this role is primarily based at Mayhew and within the communities we serve, because that's where the most powerful stories happen. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy meeting people and be passionate about finding creative ways to connect audiences with Mayhew's mission.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage Mayhew's social media channels and digital communities.
  • Proactively capture and create engaging content, including photography, video, reels, graphics and written stories.
  • Be regularly present across Mayhew's services, events and community activity to identify and develop strong content opportunities.
  • Grow and engage online audiences, moving people towards meaningful supporter action.
  • Support fundraising, volunteering, adoption and awareness campaigns through compelling social and digital content.
  • Contribute content to wider website and email activity where relevant, working with colleagues who own those channels and journeys.
  • Monitor performance, trends, audience sentiment and emerging issues, using insight to improve content and engagement.

To be successful, you will:

  • Have experience managing social media channels and creating digital content.
  • Be confident creating short-form video, photography and visual content.
  • Have excellent storytelling and communication skills.
  • Understand social media trends, audience engagement and analytics.
  • Be proactive, organised and comfortable working across multiple priorities.
  • Be confident working independently within agreed guidelines and knowing when to escalate sensitive or reputational issues.
  • Enjoy meeting people, working alongside frontline teams and uncovering great stories.

Why work for Mayhew?

Join a charity with ambitious plans, passionate people and a clear purpose. You'll help bring Mayhew's work to life, grow engaged communities and inspire more people to take action for dogs, cats and the people who care for them.

Please note that successful candidate(s) will be asked to evidence their Right to Work in the UK post-job offer - we do not hold a sponsor licence therefore we are unable to provide Visa sponsorship.
