Senior Software Developer - Java / Spring Boot / React

We are seeking an experienced Software Developer to join a high-performing Agile team delivering large-scale digital transformation within a critical public sector environment. This is an exciting opportunity to modernise legacy platforms, develop innovative digital services, and build scalable, cloud-native solutions that make a real impact.

Rate: £450 p/d outside ir35

Duration: 6 months with possible extensions

Location: mostly remote, with occasional requirement in Edinburgh or Glasgow

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and support modern web applications and REST APIs using Java, Spring Boot and React.
  • Deliver secure, scalable and maintainable solutions within an OpenShift environment.
  • Enhance automation capabilities, case management solutions and digital customer journeys.
  • Design and integrate APIs using service-oriented and event-driven architecture.
  • Produce high-quality, test-driven code using TDD, pair programming and code reviews.
  • Develop accessible, responsive user interfaces using React, Next.js, JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Create and maintain automated UI tests using Playwright.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines, application monitoring, troubleshooting and production support.
  • Work collaboratively within Agile (Kanban) teams, contributing to technical design and continuous improvement.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues while promoting engineering best practices.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial experience with Java 17/21, Spring Boot, Spring Security, OAuth2 and microservices.
  • Experience with React, Next.js, JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend development.
  • Hands-on experience with OpenShift, RabbitMQ, PostgreSQL, Jenkins and GitLab CI/CD.
  • Proven experience designing APIs, event-driven architectures and cloud-native applications.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, observability tools, Grafana/Kibana and software quality practices.
  • Experience modernising legacy systems and delivering software within Agile environments.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
