Enterprise Architect Public Sector

Enterprise Architect (Strategic) - UK Council | Hybrid (attend for key meetings)

Salary: £81,000 + enhanced pension, health insurance, and additional benefits

Be the strategic deputy to the Head of Enterprise Architecture. This is a floating Enterprise Architect role that cuts across programmes, shaping major decisions, contracts, and governance. Expect ~70-75% strategic focus with meaningful visibility at boards and architecture forums. No direct reports initially; clear path to add line management as you embed and deliver.

Why this is worth your time
  • Strategic seat at the table: Influence investment decisions, procurement choices, and target architecture across multiple programmes.

  • Wide remit, zero silos: Operate as a council-wide EA, not tied to a single domain.

  • Career headroom: Positioned as the functional deputy - scope to pick up line management and grow into broader leadership.

  • Genuinely hybrid: No weekly office mandate; attend in person for key meetings and workshops.

What you'll do
  • Set and translate strategy: Define enterprise-level principles, standards and roadmaps; steer options analysis for complex initiatives.

  • Shape commercial outcomes: Partner with commercial/procurement on contractual strategy, vendor selection and architectural guardrails.

  • Governance with bite: Sit on architecture forums/boards, provide challenge, and ensure solutions align to council strategy and citizen outcomes.

  • Operate independently: Own workstreams end-to-end; act as deputy for the Head of EA when required.

  • Coach & influence (without line authority at first): Guide solution/integration/data architecture colleagues (~10+ in the wider team) through standards and patterns.

What you'll bring
  • Enterprise architecture leadership across business and technology (framework-agnostic: TOGAF, BIZBOK, etc. all welcome).

  • Stakeholder savvy: Tactical, patient communicator who understands a citizen-first, not profit-first, environment.

  • Calm under load: Responsive and clear when the inbox is overflowing; able to prioritise and move decisions forward.

  • Public sector fluency (nice-to-have): You get governance, assurance, and equal-representation processes.

  • Tech landscape familiarity (beneficial, not mandatory): Microsoft Azure, Dynamics 365/CRM, Power BI, Microsoft Digital Contact Centre, Snowflake.

The environment you'll join
  • Team includes two Enterprise Architects, a Senior Solution Architect with a multi-disciplinary team beneath (solution/integration/data), and dotted-line collaboration with data architecture.

Reward, benefits & progression
  • Salary: £81,000 base with annual increases (3.25% this year).

  • Benefits: Enhanced public-sector pension; option to purchase up to 10 additional days' holiday; comprehensive health insurance for you and your family (premium is taxable; covers pre-existing conditions).

  • Progression: Clear review mechanisms, with potential to take on direct reports as the role grows.

Interview process (fast and structured)
  1. Panel interview with the Head of EA and senior colleagues.

  2. Scenario-based presentation with the Head of EA, CTO and a business representative.

  3. Final conversation with the CFO focused on character and behaviours.Panels follow public-sector consistency rules; shortlisting within 7-10 days of CV submission; subsequent rounds typically 4-5 days apart. References are requested early and standard vetting applies.
